Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen due to current postholder retirement, for a highly motivated and committed senior nurse to join and lead the Trust award winning and innovative Learning Disability Team.

In response to the identified needs of people with a learning disability and autistic people, Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust is committed to the equitable provision of person centred care for this patient group.

As an advocate for our patients you will work to make the organisation responsive and accessible for people with complex vulnerabilities. To achieve this you will need to have the ability to inspire people at all levels to deliver improved health outcomes. You will also need to be innovative and lead the team to ensure reasonable adjustments are made to deliver safe and appropriate care.

Main duties of the job

Provide expert advice in the care of patients with learning disabilities and autism, supporting clinical staff to have a greater understanding of their health needs, supporting their practice in the effective delivery of the standards outlined within National and local learning disability and autism policies.

Take a leading role in the implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan for people with learning disability, ensuring recommendations from the Learning Disability Improvement Standards (NHSI) are embedded in the Trust.

Be responsible for the review of local policies and process for supporting the delivery of services for people with a learning disability and autism a

Be responsible for enabling the learning disability team to manage the interface between social care, hospital services, primary care services and community specialist learning disability and autism services for patients needing acute hospital care and discharge.

Facilitate the Learning Disability Team to provide advice and guidance on assessments such as mental capacity, mental health act assessment and deprivation of liberty (DoLS) assessments of people with a learning disability and autism with support from the Trust lead for Mental Capacity Act.

Have responsibility for the line management of the Learning Disability Team, which will include responsibility for appraisals, development of staff, recruitment and where necessary processes such as grievance and disciplinary matters.

  • Educated to 1st Degree/Diploma level or equivalent
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or relevant experience

Knowledge and Training

Essential

  • Indepth knowledge of guidelines, legislation, policy and practice relating to people with a learning disability and autism
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in nursing Learning Disabilities (LD) in acute areas.
  • In-depth knowledge of safeguarding adult services and Mental Capacity Act including DoLS.

Desirable

  • Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints.

  • Recent experience of working with patients with learning disabilities and their families at a senior level within learning disability services and responsible for decision making.
