Job summary

The post holder will have a clear vision to provide outstanding individualised care and support to women and their families through the antenatal period, and be able to provide advice and support during labour and after delivery.

They will be an active member of the Birth Options Team. Primarily, but not exclusively, supporting women who have had a previous Caesarean birth with their options during their pregnancy, delivery and postnatal period.

In addition, they will be an active member of the Reflection and Resolution Team. Supporting service users and their families to discuss previously traumatic experiences and sign posting to other agencies where necessary.

Main duties of the job

1.1 Provide individualised, family centred, holistic care, which contributes to both safety and satisfaction, and facilitates all the adaptations essential for successful childbearing.

1.2 Assess, implement, and evaluate appropriate care pathway for all women and their families with a particular focus on those who have experience previous caesarean birth.

1.3 Act as a professional source of knowledge in the care of women opting for either VBAC or elective caesarean.

1.4 Advocate and facilitate women's involvement in their decision-making process.

1.5 Actively participate in the debrief service (Reflection & Resolution) providing women with the opportunity to discuss aspects of their pregnancy and birth, their feelings, emotions and concerns for future births.

Education and Training

Essential

  • Registered Midwife with extensive midwifery experience.
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Post graduate degree or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
  • Teaching qualification.
  • NIPE trained

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Able to function as a practitioner, as well as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • In depth knowledge of the principles and recommendations of current professional issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of midwifery legislation
  • Able to demonstrate good levels of theoretical midwifery knowledge.
  • Knowledge and an understanding of current professional issues and initiatives
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively at all levels, verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office applications
  • Able to prioritise own workload
  • Ability to adapt to meet changing needs and to work under pressure

Desirable

  • Knowledge of research methodology.
  • Understanding of mental health and the impact this has on pregnancy, birth and beyond
  • Knowledge and experience of handling differing cultural and religious needs
  • Have an understanding of the national agenda / Maternity Transformation Programme

  • Significant experience as a Midwife
  • Experience in supporting a woman's choice in pregnancy and birth.
