A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a band 6 midwife to join our dynamic Core Birth Centre Team.

Main duties of the job

The primary aim of the role is to ensure that a high quality service is provided to women/ birthing people and their families and to give comprehensive midwifery care in a variety of settings but mainly in the alongside midwifery-led unit. To provide the highest standard of individualised and holistic patient care, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.

You will engage with women/ birthing people and their families to encourage and promote physiological birth, person centred care and be an advocate for women/birthing people and their families in their choices.

As a registered midwife you will be competent in the full range of midwifery skills including venepuncture, cannulation, perineal suturing, maternal and neonatal resuscitation and water births. A NIPE trained midwife is desirable but training can be provided. The midwife should be able to recognise complications and the deteriorating patient and be able to make decisions on care, including when to transfer to the delivery suite.

To supervise healthcare support workers, student midwives, and junior qualified staff.

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities: to include level of responsibility for:

1.1 Maintains personal contact with service users and meets their needs on an individual basis, using the process of listening, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Is aware of the anxieties of relatives and the support they may need.

1.2 Skilled in communicating with a range of people on a daily basis some of whom may have communication barriers.

1.3 Carries out Midwifery care to the highest possible standards according to agreed policies and procedures, as well as the Midwives, Rules and Code of Practice.

1.4 Maintains the supply and custody of drugs, medicines etc., including keeping of agreed register. Ensures that measuring, administration and recording of all drugs and medicines is carried out in accordance with the rules of the NMC, and as laid down in Trust policy.

1.5 Ensures accurate and contemporaneous records of all care given and audit same. Complete and monitor other records as required by statute and local policy.

1.6 To ensure that evidence based practice is implemented and audited on a regular basis, to encourage and promote innovative practice.

1.7 Is able to recognise any deviations that require transfer to the delivery suite and ensures that the appropriate practitioner is informed promptly of any complication or change in the mothers or babys condition.

1.8 Ensure effective communication with health care professionals and other personnel, promoting relationships to enhance the quality of care to the consumer and to ensure continued care to the patient and assisting in the smooth running of the department.

1.9 Develop and maintain communication with people about difficult matters/and/or in difficult situations. Communication is a fundamental process to ensure continuity and high standards of care. It includes sharing ideas, information and feedback in order to empower patients and members of the interdisciplinary team.

1.10 Is prepared to work in all areas of the midwifery service other than the Birth Centre, in order to meet the requirements of the service and must be able to cover both day and night shifts.

Managerial responsibilities: to include level of responsibility for:

2.1 Participates in regular meetings of ward / unit staff, attends as a representative at other meetings e.g. procedure, policy, education, specialist committees, etc.

2.2 Deploys staff to meet the needs of the service, ensuring the appropriate skill mix.

2.3 Maintains ward supplies and participates in clinical trials and evaluation. Ensures that all equipment is maintained in safe working order and returned to the appropriate departments when no longer required. Ensures the economical use of resources through example and by teaching.

2.4. Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc and local policies. Comply with the departments fire regulations. Ensure the proper reporting of all accidents / incidents. Participate in investigations of any complaints. Understands and carries out NHS Trust Policies as contained in Ward / Unit.

2.5. To be responsible for disseminating Trust policies and information as required.

2.6. Provides feedback to other workers on their communication at appropriate times

2.7. Keeps accurate and complete records of activities and communications consistent with legislation, policies and procedure

2.8 Develop Managerial skills, and act up for the Band 7 operational lead midwife in her absence

Professional responsibilities: to include level of responsibility for:

3.1 Ensures all necessary records are kept correctly. Is responsible for relevant statutory notifications connected to midwifery.

3.2 With the support of Band 7 midwife, through the Trusts appraisal process to create personal development plans, identifying their educational and professional needs and updates their knowledge and skills. Incorporates research into everyday practice and improves clinical practice through reflection with self or others.

3.3 To act as a resource for the support and guidance of staff. Act as a role model to others in the team

3.4 To contribute to practice, education and development. Engages in the mentorship/Preceptorship programme, supporting students and the preceptees in developing their practice

3.5 Work within the professional role governed by The Code of Practice/Rules of the NMC, as well as locally agreed policies and procedures.

3.6 Participate in the development of Clinical Governance initiatives in conjunction with the Line Manager and monitor implementation and performance. To be involved in the process of clinical audit.

3.7 To work within the philosophies/guidelines of current professional documents/reports, plus any future initiatives.

3.8 To identify and disseminate research findings related to midwifery practice.

3.9 To assess continuing professional developments within midwifery to support changing practice.

Education and development responsibilities:

4.1 Contributes to an active and effective learning environment for junior staff. Acts as a practice facilitator for student midwives and participates in the clinical teaching of all learners, ensuring adequate supervision at all times. Acts as a preceptor for newly qualified / appointed midwives

4.2 Updates knowledge and skills in order to develop professionally, incorporating research findings into practice.

4.3 Ensures all staff participate in raising and maintaining standards of care and obtaining an understanding of the reasons for change.

4.4 Maintain clinical competence and accept responsibility for own professional development and updating, including annual mandatory updating. Facilitate the development of other midwives to achieve and maintain competencies.

4.5 Participate with enthusiasm in research projects and be aware of current issues.

4.6 To teach in the clinical setting and participate in the in-service training programmes, study days and conferences.
