Applications are invited for this full-time substantive post. The post is a replacement for a whole time Consultant Microbiologist and Infection Control Doctor within Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust (DGT), based at Darent Valley hospital. The successful candidate will join a team of 2 Microbiologists (Associate Specialists) and work closely with 3 Consultant Microbiologists at Medway NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).
Main duties of the job
The Consultant Microbiologist provides clinical & infection control services to Darent Valley Hospital and works closely with the colleagues in MFT to provide the laboratory services. The Microbiology laboratory, which has recently been refurbished, is located in Darent Valley Hospital, providing services to both DGT and MFT
You will join a dynamic and enthusiastic infection prevention and control team, consisting of a full-time Director of Infection Prevention and Control, three IP&C Specialist Nurses, two Antimicrobial Pharmacists, two Microbiologists, and an IP&C Administrator Since 2016/17, the Team have made significant improvements regarding the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections, with cases of MRSA bacteraemia and C.difficile amongst the lowest in Kent.
All applicants must possess FRCPath or equivalent, and have training and broad experience in Microbiology, including Virology and Infection Prevention & Control.

The appointee will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share in the medical contribution to management. Subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service, you are expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the professions on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of The Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.
The appointee will assist in the organisation and provision of a microbiological, diagnostic, clinical, IPC and advisory service to all healthcare services, including GP related services across the health economy.
The agreed specific duties and responsibilities of the Consultant Microbiologist are:
- Supervision of the work of the laboratory (including quality assurance and efficient use of resources) applicable to the diagnosis and management of microbial disease in patients for Dartford & Gravesham NHS trust and local GPs through remote access of the Telepath system. In rotation with other colleagues, laboratory support and oversight will be required at the NKPS laboratory.
- Liaison with Consultant clinical colleagues in response to requests for clinical advice regarding investigation and management of patients with suspected or confirmed infections. Daily ward rounds are undertaken in clinical areas and weekly ward rounds are undertaken in Neonatal & Paediatric to advise on appropriate antibiotics and encourage prudent prescribing.
