Job summary

The Haemophilia, Haemostasis and Thrombosis Department provides a range of specialised clinical, diagnostic and research laboratory services to patients with suspected and confirmed genetically inherited or acquired haemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders within the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, GP's and other Trusts within the Southern Haemophilia Network.

As Operational Manager Special Coagulation the post holder is responsible for delivering a highly specialised haemophilia, haemostasis and thrombosis clinical diagnostic technical and scientific service and the introduction of new methodologies to maintain an up to date service in the field in collaboration with the Blood Sciences Department manager and Clinical Director for Haemophilia and Southern Haemophilia Network.

A Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Biomedical Scientist performing a range of complex scientific procedures to enable the diagnosis of congenital or acquired haemophilia, haemostasis or thrombosis disorders and the associated monitoring of treatment. The role involves close working with the Haemophilia, Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre and its team of Consultants, Haemophilia/Anticoagulant/Research nurses and the Clinical Trials Unit.

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure the delivery of the department's repertoire of highly specialised tests and result interpretation to enable the clinical management of patients with confirmed or suspected haemophilia, haemostasis and thrombosis disorders in accordance with department quality standards and turn-round times (key performance indicators)
  • To ensure awareness of developments in the field of haemophilia, haemostasis and thrombosis and ensure the department's diagnostic service is responsive to changing needs of clinical practice and patient care.
  • To ensure the department's laboratory accreditation to UKAS ISO15189 is applied and maintained.
  • To ensure acceptable performance in all participating external quality assurance schemes covering the test repertoire of the department.
  • To ensure business objectives are meet and development projects are delivered according to plan.
  • To apply Trust policies and ensure the effective line management and development of all staff, including ensuring that all staff members have an annual appraisal and development review. To ensure the effective performance monitoring of contracts against activity and highlight financial risk.
