Job summary

The highly regarded and forward-thinking radiology department at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking Radiologists in response to growing demand for our services. The role will involve exposure to general radiology with a share in the plain film reporting, ultrasound, general CT and MRI workload.

We are in an exciting transition phase for the department as we begin a 10-year, £40 million programme of equipment replacement.

Our two acute sites at Basingstoke and Winchester provide radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI and interventional radiology services, most standard clinical specialties are provided at both sites. The Winchester site houses the hyper-acute stroke unit for the trust and is developing a cardiac CT service. The Breast Screening Unit is located at Winchester. The Basingstoke site houses a tertiary pseudomyxoma and peritoneal malignancy unit, tertiary liver surgery unit, and a tertiary haemophilia centre. The Basingstoke site is also a designated trauma unit within the Trauma Network. Nuclear Medicine is situated on the Basingstoke Site.

The Andover site currently offers radiography and ultrasound. It is being developed as a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) and now houses a modular CT scanner and MRI unit. Smaller community imaging facilities also exist at Alton (radiography and ultrasound).Tertiary links are in place with Southampton, Oxford, Guildford and Frimley for various clinical pathways.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for Consultant Radiologists interested in general Radiology. Candidates with subspecialty interests in one or more of Chest, Cardiac CT, MSK, Nuclear Medicine, Neuroradiology, Head & Neck, Genitourinary or GI would be of particular interest.

Successful candidates will a need to have experience in general radiology and undertake a share of the plain film reporting, ultrasound, CT and MRI workload. Successful candidates will be HHFT Consultants and may be asked to work at any of our sites (Basingstoke, Winchester or Andover). The precise details will be agreed in a job plan, and we are usually able to accommodate reasonable requests. You will be expected to participate in the diagnostic on-call rota on one of our acute sites (either Winchester or Basingstoke).

Job planning is undertaken annually for consultant radiologists during the appraisal process and incorporates provision of dedicated DCC time for preparing and running multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. The job planning process also includes discussion of consultant productivity, including MDTs, reporting statistics and additional roles.

The post is funded for up to 11.5PA incorporating 8.5 sessions of DCC, 1.5 sessions of SPA (including 1 SPA off site), 1 PA of patient related admin and an on-call payment (approximately 0.5PA), although part-time and flexible working may be an option. A detailed job plan will be agreed after successful appointment and before starting in post.

About us

Across HHFT we currently have 5 static CT scanners and 3 static MRI scanners (details below). This includes a private imaging facility on the Basingstoke site (Candover Clinic) which is part of the NHS trust and offers general X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI. Insignia PACS, CRIS and Talking point Voice Recognition are integrated across HHFT (PACS system undergoing replacement currently). Home-reporting workstations are provided for all Consultant Radiologists to facilitate the on-call service, flexible reporting and additional voluntary reporting ('insourcing').

The diagnostic on-call runs from 1700 - 2000 weekdays and 0900 - 2000 at the weekend, a separate rota for each site. An out of hours IR service is provided via a regional network with Frimley Health Foundation Trust.

The trust has recently committed to a multi-million pound programme of investment to refresh diagnostic imaging equipment over the next 10 years. The department has already benefited from a completely new fleet of Ultrasound machines, new X-ray rooms, and a new CT scanner. Two new MRI scanners are to be installed at the end of 2023.
