Job summary

This role will be a band 8d or 9 depending on the experience and expertise of the individual appointed.

The Deputy Chief Nurse is responsible for supporting the Chief Nurse in the development and delivery of the Strategy for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals.

This includes the development of leadership potential and capacity across the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals to drive and deliver consistent improvement in quality and safety, ensuring we continue to deliver outstanding care to our patients and their families.

The post holder will deputise across the full range of the Chief Nurse portfolio as required and work with Divisional Chief Nurses and wider clinical and Allied Health Professionals to meet regulatory requirements and to promote the highest standards of Nursing, Midwifery and AHP care and professional behaviours.

The postholder will have freedom to act and make decisions (Trust wide) on behalf of the Chief Nurse, taking into account a range of options such as safety, quality, and regulatory issues and where there may be a number of complicated aspects to take into account which do not have an obvious solution.

The post holder will provide leadership and support to other services within the Chief Nurses portfolio as required.

The post holder will be required to participate in the Director 'on-call' rota promptly responding to service needs 'out of hours.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide strategic leadership for nursing clinical standards across the trust.
  • To take the lead role for safer nurse staffing and nursing midwifery workforce planning, recruitment, and retention as well as line manage the lead nurse for workforce. To lead the regional safe staffing network work closely with the ADoN for non-medical clinical education.
  • To chair nursing workforce group and lead the implementation of the N&M CIP plan and agency reduction plan. Act as nursing lead for the international recruitment MOU in conjunction with HR team.
  • To line manage Lead Nurse for Patient Support Services in collaboration with estates and facilities.
  • Line manages the Lead infection control nurse on infection prevention and control.
  • To take a lead role for adult safeguarding line managing the head of adult safeguarding and act within the role of SAMA (Safeguarding Allegations Manager).
