Job summary
The Special Coagulation Department provides a range of specialised clinical, diagnostic and research laboratory services to patients with suspected and confirmed genetically inherited or acquired haemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders within the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, GP's and other Trusts within the Southern Haemophilia Network. The Southern Haemophilia Network (SHN) is the first network of its kind in the UK. It has been commissioned, by NHS England - Wessex, for the purpose of delivering a consistent standard of care to patients with inherited and acquired bleeding disorders across the region.
The post holder will be an HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist who will support the Clinical haemophilia, haemostasis and thrombosis diagnostic service. They will perform scientific investigations for diagnosis and treatment of patients with bleeding and thrombotic disorders. They will perform a complex range of tests with the aid of dedicated equipment, using the knowledge and experience gained through training, to process work through the department. They will authorise results according to agreed protocols to clinicians, nursing staff, ensuring the delivery of a professional and efficient diagnostic service. They will partake in all laboratory activities required to maintain UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation.
Main duties of the job
- To perform the specialist haemostasis analytical investigations of the department, as directed by senior staff, including platelet function screening, clotting factor and inhibitor assays.
- To perform the specialist thrombotic and lupus analytical investigations of the department, as directed by senior staff, including clotting, chromogenic, ELISA, flow cytometry and molecular based assays.
- To perform and monitor internal quality control and bring to the attention of senior staff any poor performance.
- To perform analysis for external quality assurance surveys and partake in department performance review meetings.
- To participate in and maintain the application of agreed standard operating procedures (SOP's).
- Troubleshoot analytical issues as appropriate and bring any problems to the attention of senior staff.

- Participate in the Special Coagulation Standby Roster and attend the Laboratory to undertake specialist assays as requested by the Haemostasis Consultant.
About us
The Special Coagulation Department is an enthusiastic and motivated small team consisting of an Operations Manager, one Senior Biomedical Scientist, three Specialist Biomedical Scientists and a Medical Laboratory Assistant who work closely with dedicated Clinical team of Haemostasis Consultants, Nurses and Therapists. Treatment options for patients with haemostasis disorders are continually advancing and analytical support for monitoring provides continual challenges. Platelet and complex bleeding investigations are undertaken for local and referred samples and the Department participates in an active training programme. Staff are encouraged to attend Scientific Meetings and contribute to poster presentations.
