Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for our full time 12 months fixed term Specialist in General Surgery post.

This role is a new role within the department of General Surgery and presents the opportunity to be involved in both the elective and Emergency aspects if the service.The department is a high-volume elective service, undertaking both open and laparoscopic surgical procedures including benign proctology, hernia surgery and treatment for cholecystitis. The service also has one of the largest Cancer Tumour sites in the Trust.

The department also delivers a 24/7 Surgical Emergency Service for which it has its own Surgical Assessment Unit and Ward, through which patients are assessed and admitted. As part of this role, there is likely to be an opportunity to be involved in the development of our Surgical Assessment Pathways, particularly with regards to the abscess pathway and the potential for further CEPOD lists.

The Great Western Hospital, Swindon, is a modern 425 bed District General Hospital built in 2002 serving a growing population currently in excess of 310,000 and boasting state-of-the-art facilities.

Swindon is a major town set within the rural beauty of Wiltshire, nestling between the Cotswolds to the North and Marlborough Downs to the South. Travel to major cities including Bristol, Oxford and London is easy with very frequent rail links and within an hour's journey by rail. The M4 motorway is within a couple of miles for travel by road.

Main duties of the job

The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

Clinical Care

1. Multidisciplinary team work is envisaged as a key component of the working of this Trust and will involve Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues.

2. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

3. Development of sub-specialty interests that fit in with Directorate needs, and the strategic direction of the Trust, including active participation in audit and development of new services if they fit within the future planning, case mix and development of the department.

4. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.

5. An interest in laparoscopic surgery and ability to able this to both emergency and elective case load.

6. Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.

7. Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.

8. Undertaking ward rounds as appropriate.

9. Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.

10. Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
