Job summary
The post is primarily concerned with repair and maintenance of medical equipment in the Great Western Hospitals Trustto ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. The post holder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability.The specialist nature of the work contributes towards clinical care in hospitals in primary, community and acute healthcare sectors.
Main duties of the job
- Planned preventative maintenance of medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment
- Ensuring equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime
- Equipment includes electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gas systems
- The post holder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability
The post is part of a team of multi skilled specialist engineers and technicians who support a wide range of equipment. Each member of the team is responsible for the quality of his or her own work. The work of the post holder is central to ensuring that clinical diagnosis and treatment can be delivered in a high technology healthcare environment and contributes towards clinical care in the Trust and other local organisations.
The Trust Equipment service delivers scientific, engineering, managerial and financial advice to the Great Western Hospitals NHSFT and other local organisations in the correct operation and use of modern medical technologies. It also provides a service and management facility to other local healthcare organisations under agreed Service Level Agreements

Job responsibilities
- Be responsible for carrying out the preventative maintenance (PM) and electrical safety inspection of a wide range of patient connected electromedical equipment, with a degree of autonomy and responsibility
- To support the testing and commissioning of new medical equipment, ensuring that equipment is safe for clinical use and to monitor the quality of equipment supplied by manufacturers and other commercial organisations
- To be responsible for identifying and specifying parts required for equipment repair
- Be responsible for ensuring that all medical equipment within his/her care is left in a safe and fully functional condition and ready for patient use and complies with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act especially the Electricity at Work Regulations
- To be responsible for carrying outany necessary risk assessment on tasks assigned to them to ensure that all procedures are completed in a safe manner and complies with our quality procedures; and to contribute towards development of those policies and procedures
- Be responsible for preparing PM work instructions and checksheets with reference to manufacturers instructions and regulations from other appropriate organisations (MHRA, DOH etc) and working with others to formulate and implement a PPM programme for medical equipment and preparing risk assessments on service intervals
- To ensure thatmedical staffs at all levels are advised on the correct and safe use of equipment, this may involve carrying out formal user training and communicating complex technical information to clinical staff and may impact on patient treatment
- To take part in any departmental on-call scheme and to be responsible for any work undertaken whilst on call without further supervision and travel to other healthcare establishments in the execution of their work
- To attend any necessary training courses
