Job summary

9-Month Fixed Term Contract - 37.5 hours per week Senior Biomedical Electronics Technician Band 5

The post holder is primarily responsible for the repair, calibration, and maintenance of a broad range of medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic equipment, ensuring that all devices operate safely, effectively, and with minimal downtime. This role forms part of a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled specialist engineers and technicians who provide technical support for a diverse portfolio of clinical and healthcare information technology equipment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and performance testing of a wide range of patient-connected electro-medical equipment, including some radiology devices, ensuring all equipment is safe and ready for clinical use. They will carry out complex fault diagnosis, modifications, and emergency support during procedures, often without supervision. The role includes supervising junior staff and contractors, providing technical training, completing quality-compliant documentation, and contributing to equipment evaluation and procurement. They will liaise with clinical teams and manufacturers, communicate complex technical information, and ensure all work meets ISO 9001:2015 standards and health and safety regulations. On-call work, travel to other sites, and working towards professional registration may also be required.

  • Professional electronics knowledge to degree equivalent level, acquired through BSc or BEng in a relevant engineering discipline or HND + short courses or equivalent training and experience
  • Health & Safety training as required
  • Trained to undertake Electrical Safety & Portable Appliance Testing and be able to interpret the results obtained

Desirable

  • Membership of the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) ? Registered with Engineering Council ? Member of Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) ? To have been trained in the use of Biomedical Test Equipment ? On the job training within a medical electronics department ? Specialist manufacturers' medical equipment service training courses

  • Demonstrable post qualification experience servicing a wide range of patient-connected electro-medical equipment or significant experience in non-medical electronic equipment servicing ?
