Job summary

Matron - Surgical Division / Band 8a 37.5 hours per week

The Matron will be a significantly autonomous professional clinical manager, responsible to the Trust for the clinical leadership of designated Services within the Surgical Division. The post holder will have joint strategic responsibility with the Divisional Director of Nursing, Divisional Director and Associate Medical Director to ensure business plans, budgets, workforce and staff development are in place to deliver quality of service for the division and the Trust.

The Matron will be an expert practitioner who will advise, work alongside and supervise clinical staff in order to support and develop individuals in their day-to-day practice with a focus on the needs of patients and staff.

Main duties of the job

You will be strong leader who is able to demonstrate proven ability to successfully lead and motivate the clinical team and be a positive and professional role model.

You must have excellent communication and influencing skills to both initiate and support change together with the tenacity and passion required to drive success. Continuing professional development is encouraged and you will be expected to participate actively in research, education, clinical governance, audit and guidelines.

You will be encouraged to take part in the wide range of educational and training opportunities within the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Level 1 or Registered Operating Department Practitioner on an appropriate part of the NMC / HPCP Register
  • Post graduate qualification or equivalent.
  • Recognised management qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience Educated to level.

Desirable

  • Degree at Masters or equivalent level or working towards
  • Management or Leadership training

Experience

Essential

  • Highly specialised knowledge of General Surgery and Urology services
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding Adults/Children including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Knowledge of quality and service improvement methodologies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current policy and issues in professional practice, compliance, standards and the wider NHS.

Desirable

  • Experience of change management and in writing protocols, guidelines, policies, assessing clinical competencies.
  • Experience of leading service improvement/change.
