Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the acute respiratory and rehabilitation teams as a rehabilitation physiotherapist covering both critical care and the acute wards.

You will be joining a small, established, multidisciplinary team, involved in starting crucial early rehabilitation with patients with a range of conditions within critical care and following them on their journey to the wards.

You will also be responsible for leading on discharge, which can be complex at times, and liaising with both the ward and critical care teams. You will also be involved in the management and leadership of the acute physiotherapy team and will treat non-critical care patients on the wards, as well as participating in the delivering of on call training.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a comprehensive physiotherapy service to patients within critical care and follow them on their journey to the ward. They will see a wide range of conditions including complex, multi-pathologies from paediatrics, medicine and surgery. They will also be responsible for the training of band 5 staff to work oncall. They will build on existing physiotherapy skills and consolidate specialist skills in respiratory and rehabilitation required to manage this often complex patient group, supporting them with the transition between critical care and ward based care. The will also work within the rehabilitation team seeing non critical care patients. The post holder will work approximately 50% or their time within the respiratory team, and 50% within the acute rehabilitation team.

Job responsibilities

  • When working within the respiratory team, the post holder will work predominantly within critical care treating acutely unwell patients, often with complex rehabilitation needs.
  • To be responsible for managing own caseload of patients following critical care stay with appropriate handover to ward staff, monitoring progress and discharge plans.
  • Review and monitor physiotherapy assistant respiratory competencies, providing training as required.
  • To support the rehabilitation team across all wards as needed, including assessing, treating and managing complex cases as required.
  • To work without direct supervision. Supervision will take the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions and one to one sessions with supervisor. Access to advice and support from senior respiratory and rehabilitation physiotherapists is available when required, but clinical work is not routinely evaluated.
  • To chair team meetings, planning staffing and workloads.
  • To liaise with other senior inpatient staff to ensure adequate staffing across teams and offer cover if required/able

  • HCPC registered physiotherapist
  • Educated to Degree level in Physiotherapy

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in ITU/HDU, surgical / medical inpatients, respiratory and rehabilitation
  • Experience of working as part of a MDT and of discharge planning
  • Experience of working on a respiratory on-call/weekend rota
  • Experience of supervising/managing students on placement

Desirable

  • Experience in orthopaedics, front door, community settings
  • Experience of using outcome measures
  • Involvement in audits
  • Participation in service development and implementation of change

Knowledge

Essential

  • Good verbal communication to enable effective MDT working and communicating with relatives, patients etc.
  • Highly motivated and committed to personal and service development
  • Sound clinical reasoning skills to allow for appropriate treatment selection and discharge planning
  • Able to treat complex cases and assist junior staff in their treatment
  • Good working knowledge of current NHS priorities
