This is an excellent opportunity for a Cellular Pathology consultant to join the team as clinical lead and provide leadership within the Cell path department. Post holder is expected to lead and work as part of the team of the medical staff for the Cellular Pathology service. Post holder is expected to lead the Cellular Pathology service through the ongoing development of the South 4 Pathology Partnership, ensuring that patients from the Great Western Hospital catchment benefit from the NHSE model of networked Cellular Pathology. Post holder is expected to relate and function effectively with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, appropriate administrative officials, the healthcare community, and the patient population served, and providers of formal agreements, when required, regarding the service provided by the Cellular Pathology laboratory.
Main duties of the job
To lead the Cellular Pathology service through the ongoing development of the South 4 Pathology Partnership, ensuring that patients from the Great Western Hospital catchment benefit from the NHSE model of networked Cellular Pathology.
Working with colleagues in South 4 ensure that Cellular Pathology delivers the equal quality, access to specialist testing and optimised productivity that the pathology networks are tasked to deliver.
Facilitate the smooth operational integration of Cellular Pathology services in Great Western Hospital with those of the South 4 partner trusts with a particular focus on optimising outcomes for patients in the Great Western Hospital catchment and providing them with a service with long term viability.
To relate and function effectively with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, appropriate administrative officials, the healthcare community, and the patient population served, and providers of formal agreements, when required, regarding the service provided by the Cellular Pathology laboratory.
Ensure that there are appropriate numbers of medical staff with the required education, training, competence and willingness to work with network partners to provide a service that meets the needs of the users.
Lead and work as part of the team of the medical staff for the Cellular Pathology service.

Clinical Role Responsibilities (where appropriate)
- Frequently exercises individual skills through the observation and interpretation of clinical data. This requires extensive, specialised and interpretative knowledge and a high degree of concentration and includes cases referred from other less experienced staff.
- Provides clinically relevant scientific advice through the development and application of interpretative comments.
- Practices in accordance with the Royal College of Pathologists, Trust and NHS protocols and guidelines. Is accountable for own practice and maintenance of Registration status.
- Develops own skills and knowledge, taking responsibility for Continuing Professional Development and performance to maintain a national standard of competence.
- Maintains and develops competencies across the repertoire of the area of responsibility. This includes updating knowledge to maintain the most effective use of resources for the tasks performed in that area.
- Applies sound analytical knowledge and critical thinking to manage complex situations in a dynamic environment.
- Communicates effectively with other staff groups, both internal and external to department and organisation. This will include healthcare professionals, senior Trust management, other Trust departments like estates, external agencies, commercial suppliers, service engineers and visitors and occasionally patients and their representatives.
- Provides and receives complex scientific information to and from clinical and technical colleagues where empathic and reassurance skills are required. Is aware of barriers to understanding and can present information accordingly.
Managerial and Training Responsibilities
- The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
- Responsible for compliance to all relevant guidelines and directives in area of responsibility including Policy development and implementation.
- Participating in ensuring that UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) standards within area of responsibility are maintained and includes preparation and revision of Policy documents.
- Supervises Trainee Medical staff working in area of responsibility and includes motivational, evaluation and conflict management skills.
- Attends and, if necessary, performs staff appraisals in accordance with the Trust Policy ensuring own personal and professional development and the effective management and development of staff.
- Actively promotes diversity, both in the delivery of the service and in the recruitment, management and development of staff.

- o Ensure teams are following professional codes of practice, and seek assurance clinical governance processes are in place.
- o Act on poorly behaved and performing doctors within the specialty in a way consistent with Trust guidance and Trust policies and that concerns about performance are dealt with promptly and effectively.
- o Ensure the delivery and assessment of high-quality training and teaching within the speciality and that doctors are properly trained, aligned to service need.
- o Lead by example ensuring the General Medical Council (GMC) Good Medical Practice is always adhered to.
