Job summary

This post is aimed at post-foundation year doctors (FY3+) who have prior experience as teaching fellows or equivalent and wish to spend time working in a medical educational role at the Academy in Swindon, working with medical students from the Universities of Bristol (UoB), Oxford (UoO) & Kings College London (KCL). The principle role of this job is to support the Clinical Teaching fellows, to deliver undergraduate teaching and to undertake educational research programs. The post is suitable for doctors who are interested in a career in medical education who may be studying for a higher degree such as an MSc or doctorate (MD/PhD).

Main duties of the job

The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

  1. To act as lead for the cohort of CTFs across the Swindon Academy in:
  2. Sharing good practice
  3. Coordinating development of teaching and other resources (e.g. around student support)
  4. Encouraging innovation and producing case studies of projects undertaken
  5. Development of a shared central repository of academy teaching materials in conjunction with the central school teams
  6. Encouraging greater standardisation of teaching resources and delivery, whilst encouraging the individual strengths of academies
  7. Liaising with pathway/clerkship/assistantship and year leads about utility of existing teaching methods and contributing to course development in partnership with them.
  8. Collating feedback from CTFs.
  9. Acting as a source of information for new CTFs and helping to design appropriate CTF induction meetings and packages.
  10. Enhancing handover from one group of CTFs to the next.
  11. Helping with the agendas and chairing of CTF meetings.
  12. Attendance at the quarterly Undergraduate Medical Education Committee meeting by invite.
  13. Chairing meetings of the CTF cohort and acting as spokesperson(s) in raising queries or concerns with the school in conjunction with the Academy Deans and Director of Undergraduate Medicine
  14. Attendance at Curriculum Innovation Group, Programme Management Committee or Academy Management Group, as appropriate

This role is a new post and focuses on leadership and supervision to the cadre of Clinical Teaching Fellows teaching the undergraduate medical students within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital.

The Senior CTFs main role is to help the Academy Dean (AD), Deputy Deans, UG Manager, the UC / UTs and other teachers deliver the undergraduate curriculums of the three universities.

This post will be made up of an educational leadership role (50%) delivered in the academy as well as a supernumerary clinical component in the NHS Trust (50%). A normal week must be split as evenly between academy and clinical. You may choose whichever clinical area you wish to work. You may choose to switch this area at each yearly interval.

The post is suitable for doctors who have previous experience at the level of Clinical Teaching Fellow, an educationalist with ongoing clinical input.

The successful candidate will be required to hold a post-graduate qualification in Medical Education (e.g. Certificate, Masters or higher degree Medical Education)

The Lead CTF will work on a day-to-day basis with the Academy Undergraduate Manager and administrators, and the UC / UTs who are responsible for organizing the formal teaching programme and clinical placements for that Unit in their Academy.
