Job summary

This role is an additional role within the department of Cancer Services. As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing, you will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. The Trusts Health and Wellbeing team has won a National Award during 2020 for the work they have done locally.

The Great Western Hospital is a Cancer Unit with links to the Oxford Cancer Centre and is part of the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA). There are three medical oncologists based at the Great Western Hospital and five clinical oncologists who are based at the Oxford Cancer Centre and provide outpatient sessions and chemotherapy clinics in Swindon, together with regular attendance at MDTs. The Trust has an established Acute Oncology Service to improve the management of patients admitted with complications of their chemotherapy or underlying cancer diagnosis, and to facilitate investigation and management of patients admitted as an emergency with a new cancer diagnosis. This service is led by the Medical Oncology consultants, supported by the speciality doctors, a specialist acute oncology nurse and clerical support. Patients are managed by the relevant medical or surgical team, with regular visits from the oncology team.

Main duties of the job

Patients receive most chemotherapy and immunotherapy schedules as day cases at The Great Western Hospital. Those requiring inpatient chemotherapy and/or concomitant radiotherapy are transferred to the Cancer Centre at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. Radiotherapy is provided at the Cancer Centre and most patients attend as outpatients. There are weekly MDTs covering breast, skin, urological, lung, gastro-intestinal (upper GI and colorectal) and gynaecological cancer, supported by MDT co-ordinators.

The job plan will be reviewed annually and numbers of DCCs and SPAs will reflect the whole time equivalence of the post. A detailed job plan will be developed with the successful candidate based on their agreed number of contracted hours.

The job plan will include 2 sessions/week:

  • 1 session to be assessing the new people coming through and pointing them in the right direction (assess the referral letter, review the bloods, FIT and CT scan) - ~ 15 patients
  • 1 clinic per week to see the new patients who cannot be pointed in the direction of a specific tumour site ~ 5 patients

The successful candidate will be expected to organise their workload and operate an appointment system in a manner that is consistent with good practice as laid out in the Trust's Policy for Acute Adult Cancer Services Operational Policy and the Management of Waiting Lists and Times.
