Job summary

The Community Rehab Therapy Team are very excited to offer a new opportunity for Rehabilitation Assistants.

You will be able to work as a Rehabilitation Assistant and work towards a degree in Physiotherapy. You will work as an Rehabilitation Assistant in practice and have 20% off the job training at university.

You will also be released for Clinical placements as part of your degree.

Main duties of the job

  • A Trainee apprentice Physiotherapist (PT) is a developmental role. You will continue employment within the directorate/service you are currently employed. You will be given the opportunity to gain a qualification to become a registered Physiotherapist whilst still supporting and delivering a service with your current team. Once qualified, you would then be able to apply for an available vacant post within the organisation.
  • During your training you will enhance your skills of working within a therapy team to a competent standard and at the end of your apprenticeship, you will be able to demonstrate these competencies to gain a degree qualification to support your application for a qualified Band 5 Physiotherapy position.
  • You will undertake and complete all elements of the Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship. You will attend university and be allocated full time clinical placements to gain your degree in Physiotherapy (4 year BSc (hons); the university will be responsible for teaching the course material and assess you accordingly, you will be expected to attend these taught sessions throughout your apprenticeship.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To assist with the ongoing development of the Community Rehabilitation Services. To provide high quality care, timely intervention and assist with timely discharge response, prevention of readmission and rehabilitation.
  • To be responsible for assessing the medical fitness of patients before commencing treatment and to communicate immediately with an appropriate professional any change in patients status or other observations about patient behaviour, ability and response to therapeutic intervention.
  • To carry out general clerical, administrative and department duties in support of clinical work and at the direction of the Therapists.
  • To participate in training programmes, supervision and to take every opportunity to learn and develop skills, knowledge and competencies which will enhance both personal and professional development.
  • To train and supervise less experienced staff and students as required in conjunction with the rest of the team.
  • To work contracted hours over 7 days participate in weekend working.
  • To make a commitment to study both within working hours and at home during the duration of the apprenticeship course.
  • To attend lectures, seminars and practical teaching session at the designated University each week and to utilise the skills learnt within your workplace.
  • To work within the boundaries of competence (which will change throughout the course) utilising theory and skills learnt on placement and university, in collaboration with work based mentor and university staff.
  • To attend all placements at whatever location is available via the University placement scheme (please note, these cannot be guaranteed to be locally).

QUAL

Essential

  • GCSE grade A-C or 4-9 (or equivalent) including English and Maths.
  • A level 3 qualification in health or 3 A levels including Biology.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting.

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of health and safety issues e.g. manual handling, infection control
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and consent
  • Previous experience as a Physiotherapy assistant or Occupational therapy assistant.
  • Previous experience in mobilising/ moving patients with various equipment and weight bearing abilities

Desirable

  • To have experience of supervising others
  • To have experience in obtaining ward handovers and prioritising patients.
  • To have an up to date and relevant CPD file

Knowledge

Essential

  • Competent in issuing walking aids and carrying out stair assessments OR issuing basic OT equipment for home.
  • Able to organise self and workload in order to complete given tasks; within a given timescale.
  • Ability to remain calm when dealing with people who are angry or upset
  • Ability to motivate and encourage patients

Desirable

  • Competency in case simple new patient assessments.
  • Experience of setting treatment plans, goals etc
