Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic Registered Nurse to apply for the role of a Breast Care Specialist Nurse at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

We are an established, forward thinking and dynamic team, dedicated to supporting patients with breast cancer right through from screening, treatment and into survivorship.

You will be a key worker, instrumental in influencing and advocating for the patient and those around them. You will provide essential cross department liaison and develop advanced communication skills to improve the patient's journey and experience. In collaboration with the team you will provide specialist breast cancer education to clinical staff. Providing expert clinical knowledge and strong role modelling is an essential component of the role.

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic nurse with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You should have experience and understanding in caring for and in meeting the needs of patients with cancer, demonstrable organisational skills and be able to work both autonomously and as part of a team.

A flexible approach is needed to manage to changing picture of cancer care, with a willingness to respond to the changing needs of the Trust and its patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within the Breast Care Nursing team providing specialist advice and support to both patients and their families during the breast diagnostic and treatment pathway. The specialist nurse will work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team and will work across breast cancer services including screening, symptomatic and oncology services.

The post holder will work alongside the Cancer Management Team providing clinical excellence for all patients with cancer. They will contribute to the strategic vision for cancer within the Trust, Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network and South West Region Breast Screening Service, working towards meeting National Cancer Quality Standards. Emphasis will be placed on education, development and empowerment of colleagues and Trust employees who interact with patients under the care of the breast services.

  1. Act as a Key Worker for patients throughout the diagnostic, treatment and metastatic pathway liaising across all care setting
  2. Provide expert knowledge and ensure safe care is delivered to the patient along the breast care pathway
  3. Works as an autonomous practitioner managing and organizing own workload, reflecting the core components of the specialist nurse role i.e. clinical, management, research and education
  4. Acts as a clinical resource utilizing specialist knowledge, supporting staff education and development across the Trust to enhance patients quality of care
  5. Ensure compliance with local and national guidelines and professional initiatives ensuring these are applied to practice meeting NMC revalidation requirements

  7. To offer support for women participating in the Breast Screening Programme and those recalled for further assessment

Patient Client Care

  1. To act as a key worker actively participating in the multidisciplinary team meetings, acting as an advocate for the patient when relevant
  2. To communicate effectively with patients and families, providing relevant support, information, education and counseling when necessary for women undergoing breast screening and subsequent treatment.
  3. Demonstrate ability to assess and support breast cancer patients regarding physical, psychological, psychosexual, social and spiritual needs by undertaking a holistic needs assessment
  4. Assess cosmetic needs of women requiring breast cancer surgery / treatment and give practical information on all aspects of altered body image and breast prostheses
  5. Provide specialist support and advice to patients diagnosed with secondary breast cancer and refer to specialist Palliative Care services as appropriate
  6. Assess and meet patients information needs to enable patients to make informed decisions concerning treatment options
  7. Demonstrates awareness of genetic implications in breast cancer and process of referral to the Genetic team
  8. Ensure ones own clinical knowledge is continuously updated and reflects current research findings
  9. Refers to and accepts referrals from other disciplines and professionals independently
  10. Is committed to the promotion of safeguarding and the welfare of all patients and families in their care, in particular children, young people and vulnerable adults
  11. Recognizes the survivorship issues for breast cancer patients living with cancer and refers to appropriate agencies when complex issues are raised
  12. Identifies patients at risk of developing lymphoedema post treatment for breast cancer. Assesses, and educates on thee prevention, early detection and management of lymphoedema.
