Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the performance management team at the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will have all the necessary qualifications, knowledge & experience required to ensure that the Trust is fulfilling its statutory responsibilities regarding sustainability, energy management and waste.

Main duties of the job

Sustainability and Energy Management

  1. Responsible for managing the Trust's energy/utility and waste invoices, including reviewing the contracts and assisting the Head of Sustainability to ensure best value for money using relevant benchmarking information.
  2. To support the delivery of long-term strategies for improving sustainability as part of the Green Plan which will be reviewed to support the Trusts strategic and operational objectives.
  3. Establish, co-ordinate and support the Green teams to deliver their projects.
  4. Responsible for co-ordinating and running staff awareness events.
  5. Responsible for initiating, developing, and monitoring the Trust's Environmental policies and procedures.
  6. Will act as an advocate improving environmental standards and sustainable healthcare services.
  7. To maintain and operate effective record keeping systems for all sustainability & project activities, including the use of spread sheets & specialist estates software.
  8. To manage approved capital budgets ensuring that expenditure is delivered within budget, by reviewing & analysing technical & complex information and negotiating with suppliers and contractors to ensure maximum value

  1. Responsible for managing all energy and waste projects including planning, costing, writing business cases and ensuring effective delivery. This will include managing sub-contractors, chairing group meetings of staff from a wide range of disciplines and departments, resolving issues and ensuring projects achieve their objectives.
  2. Ensure that THC/FM Co and Trust teams are compliant both with statute and with the contract, taking advice and support from the Head of Sustainability and Head of Capital Development and Property Services as necessary.
  3. To support the Trust in its annual data returns (e.g., ERIC) and annual Board and Sustainability Reports.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree level qualification in a Sustainability, Environmental or Energy Management discipline or relevant equivalent experience
  • Specialist knowledge acquired through additional courses and experience to diploma level or equivalent
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Desirable

  • Practitioner level professional membership e.g. IEMA, IES or CIEEM

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive practical experience and knowledge managing sustainability/energy reduction and behaviour change
  • Specialist knowledge of carbon reduction opportunities in a healthcare environment
  • Successful track record in project management

Desirable

  • Waste management in a clinical environment
  • Previous NHS experience

Skills

Essential

  • Able to prioritise significant workloads and resource them in response to changing demands and requirements
  • Able to set and review project targets and adjust activity to meet targets
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills
  • Logical and consistent approach to data collection and monitoring, recording and audit with ability to identify and analyse trends and patterns.
