Job summary

This role is for up to 32 hours a week worked over 4 - 5 days to commence on 4th September 2023 or at a mutually agreed later date (latest start date February 2024). This post may also be suitable for someone who wanted to work less than full time or as part of a job share.

It is for a 6 months fixed term contract (subject to start date). The successful candidate may have the option to extend their contract for up to a further 6 months on mutual agreement.

The candidate should have a non-judgemental attitude and open mind, this is arguably more important for this role rather than an in depth knowledge of Sexual Health. There will be a comprehensive induction period, training will be provided on the job according to the level of competence of the successful candidate.

  • GP's with a special interest are encouraged to apply as a job share position. There is funding available for training courses and qualifications via the Newly Qualified GP Scheme. This can be used to undertake the DFSRH qualification, STIF course and STIF competencies.
  • Obstetric and Gynaecology Specialty Trainees may wish to apply and undertake this as an Out of Programme Experience for 6- 12 months.
  • F3 doctors who have completed the Foundation Programme would also be very suitable to apply.
  • Additionally it is suitable for junior doctors interested in a career in GP, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Public Health and of course Sexual Health, HIV and Reproductive Health.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties:

  1. To take careful and relevant histories and to examine male and female patients including genital examinations, perform routine microscopy (training provided if required), request investigations and interpret results, and prescribe treatments for STIs according to the clinic protocols and in accordance with National BASHH guidelines.
  2. Take detailed medical histories from patients and advise about all available methods of contraception including LARC's.
  3. Safeguard vulnerable patients including young people aged under 18 and vulnerable adults. Level 3 safeguarding training should be achieved and maintained during the post.
  4. If the post holder is able to fit LARC's then they would be expected to do this within the integrated contraception clinics. If the post holder is not a LARC fitter then training can be provided if they desire to do so.
  5. Provide relevant sexual health promotion to men and women.
  6. Refer patients to health advisers and other healthcare partners where appropriate.
  7. Keep detailed electronic notes of consultations on the 'Lilie' IT system.
  8. Liaise with nurses, health advisers and laboratory staff as required for the optimal management of all patients.
  9. Carry out partner notification in accordance with the clinic guidelines.
  10. Sexual health run a 'field clinic' every year at Swindon Pride Festival, the post holder would be expected to participate in this.

The work will be primarily clinical, undertaking and supervising outpatient Integrated Sexual Health and Contraception clinics.Post holders will be supported and encouraged to undertake the following qualifications if they do not already hold them: the Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Health and the BASHH STI Intermediate or Integrated competencies

We also support doctors wishing to undertake the Letter of Competence for subdermal implants and intrauterine devices as well as other post graduate exams.

  • To contribute to the leadership and development under the direction of the Lead Clinician and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trusts business plans.
  • The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.
  • Work within the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.
