Job responsibilities
Finance
Ensure the allocation and location of medical devices/test equipment is recorded accurately.
Care of tools, test equipment and other Trust property.
Be aware of the cost implications associated with the servicing and repair of medical devices
Implement the Trusts equipment replacement plan.
Assess when equipment is beyond economic repair.
Ensure a sufficient stock of spares and accessories within your van and responsible stations as per the agreed inventory.
Communication
Liaise with equipment users and other staff on issues relating to the maintenance and operational safety of equipment, translating technical language into everyday language and understanding clinical terminology relating to equipment usage.
Provide, receive and analyse complex information in relation to medical devices.
Inform users on the progress of servicing/repairs
Deliver cascade equipment technical training to other clinical engineering staff.
Liaise with equipment suppliers on issues relating to equipment maintenance and safety, relaying complex technical information
Effectively communicate organisation policy relating to medical devices
Liaise with the Specialist Technician in cases where specialised knowledge is required to handle a particular fault or situation.
Personal and People Development
Develop and agree own personal development plan with feedback from others from internal and external parties.
Train junior departmental staff to ensure the service is delivered effectively and safely.
Participate in continual professional development in the field of clinical engineering in particular by attending training and update courses on device maintenance/repair and physiology.
Service Delivery and improvement
Undertake advanced fault finding on medical devices. Apply suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems including those beyond the scope of manufacturers supplied information
Report novel fault conditions to manufacturers. Exercise judgment to determine the causes of faults in devices with multiple complex and inter-related systems (e.g. electronic, computer and mechanical systems), which may require assessment of specialist clinical conditions or may be due to user error, equipment failure or environmental issue (rf interference or temperature for example)
Confirm test equipment is correctly calibrated for maintenance and repair activities
Organise, co-ordinate, initiate planned preventative maintenance to specified schedule
Commission, calibrate, update, maintain and repair complex medical devices and test equipment without direct supervision.
Attend Trust sites/vehicles on a regular basis as well as workshop activity to perform device maintenance and repair. This may involve the movement of heavy items of medical equipment. Frequent exposure to electricity, compressed gas, body fluids on/in equipment, dust, fumes and noise.
Act on relevant safety notices as received from MHRA or the manufacturer.
Supervise the work of junior or less experienced staff within Clinical Engineering
Advise on needs for new or replacement medical devices
Monitor stock levels and replenish as required through the departmental system.
Follow departmental procedures for maintenance/repair of medical devices and comment on any proposed changes.
Undertake investigations into device related incidents in accordance with Trust policies and requirements.
Perform urgent and unscheduled repairs which will interrupt daily working schedules.
Complete device records accurately
To ensure that Trust safety policies and working procedures are adhered to when carrying out work on clinical equipment and to recommend changes that will enhance the service.
The post holder will be required on a daily basis, after appropriate manual handling training, to lift, move and transport clinical equipment within the trust and to other sites where the department has a maintenance commitment. This includes loading/unloading vehicles and travelling between sites.
To generate ideas and fully contribute to and implement the findings of any audit of the Clinical Engineering service undertaken.
Quality
To accurately record all work carried out, materials used, and any other details required by the Clinical Engineering Manager in support of the Trusts equipment management system.
