To work with theDivisional Nurse Director -Surgery/CSS to provide professional and operational leadership and management of the services, delivering a safe quality service while meeting financial targets. To provide expert advice regarding professional nursing issues within Surgery in the absence of the Divisional Nurse Director.
The post holder and the Divisional Nurse Director will support the delivery of the broader corporate professional agenda, including developing innovative nursing strategies to enable a strong and empowered workforce at all levels that is fit for purpose and equipped to deliver excellence in care standards. This also includes securing the workforce for the future.
You will assist the Divisional Nurse Director in developing and delivering clinical services and professional standards, including developing nursing leadership. The post holder will lead delegated projects within the division and assist with shaping the divisional nursing direction and strategy, focusing on quality, safety, recruitment, and retention.
The post holder will support the development of an open and honest culture within the medicine services that empower innovation, creativity, and learning at the ward and departmental levels.
Main duties of the job
Provide professional and managerial leadership to designated nursing and specialist teams, offering a highly visible and authoritative presence that ensures high-quality, patient-centred care. You will support the Divisional Nurse Director in driving the surgical transformation plan, contributing to key national priorities around improvement, assurance, and sustainability, while being accountable for all clinical aspects of quality within your service areas. You will oversee service performance, meet agreed targets, and help shape new models of care by promoting staff engagement and development. Maintaining a consistent presence in clinical areas, you will act as a reliable point of support for patients, families, and staff, while practising as a Lead Nurse to enhance clinical standards and role model excellence. You will benchmark high-risk services against best practice, champion population health needs, and ensure services remain accessible, dignified, and responsive. As a key member of the divisional leadership team, you will help shape nursing strategy, provide leadership to the matrons in Surgery, support their development, and deputise for the Divisional Nurse Director as required. You will also represent nursing within Trust and external forums, actively contributing to divisional, directorate, and organisational objectives.
