Job summary

UNIT SISTER/CHARGE NURSE-EOU Band 6

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an already strong hardworking team within the Surgical Division

We are looking for a motivated enthusiastic individual who possess excellent care values and are able to deliver a high quality service within the surgical division of trauma and orthopaedics.

You must have a strong sense of team spirit and be able to offer continued development support and learning to an existing well developed team.

You must be able to demonstrate excellent clinical leadership and organisational skills whilst working in a fast paced and challenging environment.

You will be expected to plan coordinate and work in partnership with an established MDT

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical expertise to the ward/department team, acting as a role model in the delivery of patient care. To support the Team leader in the effective management of the clinical area. To always act in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures. Job responsibilities

SECTION 1- MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROFESSIONAL / CLINICAL:

Ensure the delivery of evidence-based nursing care by providing expert clinical assessment, care planning, care delivery, care evaluation and clinical advice in accordance with NMC The Code.

Working in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, competently undertake expanded roles, and assess the competence of other clinical staff to do so, to enhance the delivery of patient care, e.g. venepuncture, intra-venous cannulation, ECG recording, intravenous drug administration.

Use own clinical judgement to initiate appropriate nursing interventions prior to medical input being available.

Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records and ensure that all records relating to patient care are clear, concise and legible in accordance with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.

In liaison with the Matron and other professionals lead the development and implementation of relevant clinical guidelines and policies.

Ensure adherence to the Trust Medicines Policy and the NMC Standards for the Administration of Medicines.

Participate in audits of practice and clinical effectiveness in accordance with Divisional audit plan.

Lead specific areas of practice developments in accordance with local and national policies and strategies to improve patient care.

Actively manage risk within the clinical area in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and risk management policy.

Effectively utilise appropriate patient information, responding to communication barriers.

Work within Data Protection and Caldecott requirements for information sharing.

ADMINISTRATIVE / MANAGERIAL:

Take charge of the shift on a regular basis and allocate the clinical workload appropriately within the team

Plan duty rotas as required by the Unit Manager.

Work collaboratively with the Bed Management Team to ensure admission and discharge procedures adhere to the Trust Bed Management Policy.

Work within clinical governance systems and ensure that care is delivered within an appropriate model.

Deputise for the Unit Manager as required.

Implement and ensure adherence to all Trust policies.

Contribute to the achievement of Trust targets.

Support the Unit Manager in effective resource management.

Participate in the identification of cost improvements initiatives.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT:

Support effective intra and inter departmental communication.

Provide competent and consistent leadership to the ward/department team.

Undertake PDRs for junior colleagues and ensure PDPs are in place.

Participate in training and development for all staff, ensuring that accurate records are maintained.

Participate in recruitment and selection processes as required and facilitate induction and preceptorship for newly deployed and newly qualified staff.

Ensure that educational objectives of student nurses and other learners are met and the progress of each student/learner is monitored.

Participate in the management of sickness / absence.

Participate in clinical supervision in accordance with Trust policy.

SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Possess expert clinical knowledge appropriate to area of responsibility.

Utilise own clinical expertise and knowledge to create and promote an environment conducive to meeting the educational and developmental needs of all clinical staff.
