This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced dietitian to join our friendly team of Paediatric Dietitians who provide a service across the community, children's ward and neonatal unit. The team are committed to service improvement and meeting the needs of our children and families. They work closely with the Integrated Service for Children with Additional Needs (ISCAN), health visitors, school nurses and wider children's services.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide a quality dietetic service to children with additional needs, some of whom are tube fed. In addition, they will run some general outpatient clinics across different community settings and occasionally provide cover to the children's ward and neonatal unit, although this will be with support as required. They will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the children, working especially closely with the ISCAN (Integrated Service for Children with Additional Needs) team. There will be opportunity to contribute to service improvement and development and provide training to other services in the area.

- To support and provide appropriate dietetic treatment as necessary to children and their families.
- To work alongside other disciplines involved in childrens care and to provide a first port of call for queries from these.
- To identify barriers to understanding and negotiate achievable individual programmes of care for the child and family.
- To identify child / family functioning issues which may impact on negotiation and motivation to achieve the care plans for home and other settings such as school.
- To take part in safeguarding supervision alongside other Paediatric Dietitians and to attend case conferences/core groups as required.
- To use a range of communication skills to establish a rapport and demonstrate empathy whilst giving effective support / advice to distressed patients / carers and or family members.
- To demonstrate empathy with patients and carers ensuring their views, choices and experiences influence Dietetic care provision where appropriate.
- To have good telephone skills to be able to reassure and support families over the telephone as well as being able to conduct dietetic assessments and provide treatment plans over the telephone.
- To use a range of communication tools including motivation and negotiation.
- To recognise barriers to change and be familiar with different types of communication e.g. verbal and non-verbal. To be able to use cognitive behavioural approaches where necessary.
- To promote integrated working with other disciplines, including holding joint consultations and setting common targets as appropriate.
- To provide effective evidence based training to multi-disciplinary colleagues as required.
- To maintain close links with the childrens ward and neonatal unit to provide dietetic support as required.
- To communicate and liaise with other agencies appropriately, e.g. other members of MDT, catering, pharmacy, adult dietitians, safeguarding team.
- To communicate in writing with other agencies, e.g. GPs, community dietitians / nurses and schools about patient care.
- To work through link workers or interpreters and use visual aids where necessary to overcome communication barriers.
- To develop clear concise reports for the referrers to the service.
- To maintain accurate and comprehensive dietetic records and treatment plans in line with organisational standards.
- To accurately record in nursing and medical notes.
- To refer on to members of the MDT as required.
- To develop links and seek peer guidance and support from paediatric dietitians at other Trusts and tertiary centres when required as well as from the local team and Lead Paediatric Dietitians
- To participate fully in own appraisal and development
- Use professional judgment and expertise to assess and analyse a wide range of clinical conditions. Many patients have multiple conditions where conflicting treatment options require complex and sensitive evaluation to formulate the best evidence based nutritional plan.
- To undertake nutritional assessments, including analysis of dietary intake, interpretation of biochemistry and prescribed medication.
- Calculate nutritional requirements taking into account expected clinical outcome / quality of life as well as medical, social and cultural factors.
- To devise a treatment plan taking account of complex and sometimes conflicting information which is appropriate to family circumstances at that time.
- To maintain own competence and update professional and clinical knowledge as part of a continuous process of professional development.
- To record evidence of ongoing learning in order to provide evidence for Health Professions Council registration.
- To work interdependently within a multidisciplinary team advising Consultant, other AHPs (Allied Health Professionals) and nursing staff on the dietetic management of patients.
- To advise medical staff on the prescribing of appropriate products, for example enteral tube feeds, specialist infant formula, supplements, vitamins and minerals etc.
