There has never been a more exciting time to become a Ward Sister/Charge nurse within the Medicine Division (Ward 44) which specialises in care of the elderly medicine at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Internal promotion, operational redesign and service review have given the division a unique opportunity to appoint a number candidates into a developmental sister/charge nurse roles.

We are looking for natural leaders who have the ability to develop and lead teams with the delivery of high quality care for our patients whilst ensuring our teams are well led and operationally effective.

You will have a depth and breadth of both clinical and some managerial experience at a Band 5 or above and be looking for the next step within your Nurse Leadership Career. Your clinical knowledge base will run in parallel to your leadership acumen to deliver the role of the Ward Sister supported by the Ward Manager.

Ward 44 is a care of the elderly ward caring for patient who have a range of conditions. The successful candidate will be part of an integrated service working alongside the specialist teams.

The post holder will work closely with and support the department/ward manager and multidisciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care, staff and service development within the department/ward environment. The post holder will supervise junior qualified and/or unqualified staff including student nurses whilst maintaining a safe working environment.

SECTION 1- MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To demonstrate competence in a wide range of expanded roles including: Venepuncture, cannulation, ECG recording, requesting and obtaining pathology samples, NG and PEG feeding, administration of medication's via multiple routes and utilising PGDs.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical decision making skills.

Excellent communication skills to ensure that patients, relatives and the multi-disciplinary team are able to understand the complex needs of the patients.

To complete Trust documentation/liaise with all agencies regarding the possibility of any Safeguarding Adult/Children issues.

Maintain effective communication within the team by ensuring that information is transmitted at handover and is documented either in the notes, appropriate folders or on the computer system as necessary.

To record accurately all documentation relating to a patients episode within the department in the appropriate systems for future referencing as required.

Assist in maintaining a calm, efficient and cost effective service.

Assist in Co-ordinate/facilitate new staffs orientation to the department.

Undertake individual responsibilities as delegated.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure the delivery of evidence-based nursing care in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct

Keep up-to-date with NHD developments, in particular NICE guidelines and NSFs ensuring that nursing practice within the department develops accordingly.

To participate in the clinical governance agenda, audits of areas within the Medicine Division.

To maintain up to date clinical practice standards and knowledge, and act as a professional role model for all staff.

Use clinical judgement to initiate appropriate nursing interventions prior to medical input.

Maintain accurate, current and contemporaneous records and ensure that all records relating to patient care are clear, concise and legible in accordance with the NMC

Standards for Records and Record Keeping.

Ensure adherence to the Trust Medicines Policy and the NMC Standards for

the Administration of Medicines.

Actively assess and manage risk within the clinical area in accordance with Health and

Safety legislation and risk management policy.

Work within Data Protection and Caldicott requirements for information sharing.

To maintain continuous professional registration with the NMC throughout the duration of employment with the Trust.

TEACHING & DEVELOPMENT:

Act as a clinical supervisor to junior clinical staff completing appraisals and agreeingpersonal development plans.

Promote clinical innovations and encourage evidence-based practices within the unit.

Assist in the developments of components for a teaching program for use within the unit.

ADMINISTRATIVE/MANAGERIAL:

Assist with duty rotas as required by the Senior Sisters/Charge Nurse.

Be responsible for the authorisation of timesheets/overtime as and when required.

Team Leader Nurse as required.

Implement and ensure adherence to all Trust policies.

Effectively contribute to the achievement of Trust targets.

Support the Ward Manager and Matron for Medicine in effective resource management.

Participate in the identification of cost improvement initiatives with Ward Managers and Matron.
