Sister/Charge Nurse - Accident and Emergency Band 6 - 37.5 hours

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Urgent care team as Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse within the Emergency Department at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. Both full and part time post are available.

We have recently started a £20m refurbishment of our Emergency Care Village so there has never been a more exciting time to join the Urgent Care Directorate influencing and shaping the both the Emergency Care our patients receive and the environment our staff work in.

It's an exciting moment in the Trust's history, and while there will inevitably be some disruption as the project progresses, it will leave us with a facility fit for the 21st Century. Work is set to be completed in March 2024.

Your role will be to provide leadership and enhanced skills on the management and care of our patients in the Emergency Department and supervision of junior staff.

The successful candidate, will have significant Emergency Nursing experience and will lead by example using excellent communication skills, manage, prioritise and deliver high quality care to our patients.

You will have completed level 2 RCN competencies and as a clinical expert, proactively develop yourself and others. You will lead and supervise the clinical work of others and manage the emergency care setting as a whole; managing patient flow and delegating care accordingly.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide clinical expertise to the departmental team, acting as a role model in the deliveryof patient care.

  • To always act in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder must demonstrate competence in a wide range of expanded roles including: Venepuncture, cannulation, ECG recording & interpretation, plastering, requesting and obtaining pathology samples, suturing, utilising PGDs, requesting and interpreting x-rays and Advanced Life Support.
  • The post holder must demonstrate a high level of clinical decision making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills are required to ensure that patients, relatives and the multi-disciplinary team are able to understand the often complex needs of the patients.
  • To complete Trust documentation/liaise fully with all agencies if any suspicions arise regarding the possibility of any form of abuse having taken place in relation to the patient being treated.
  • Maintain effective communication within the team by ensuring that information is transmitted at handover and is documented either in the notes, appropriate folders or on the computer system as deemed necessary. All documentation relating to a patients episode within the department is to be recorded accurately in the patient's notes/computer system for future referencing as required.
  • Ensure a calm, efficient and cost effective service is maintained.
  • Review the daily skill mix deploying staff appropriately to maintain the safety of the staff, patients and relatives within the department. In the absence of the Band 7 staff member
  • co-ordinate/facilitate new staffs orientation into the department.
  • Deputise for the Senior band 7 when required
  • Undertake individual responsibilities as delegated to the post holder

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the delivery of evidence-based nursing care by providing expert clinical assessment, care planning, care delivery, care evaluation and clinical advice in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct within the Critical Care area as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To keep up-to-date with NHD developments, in particular NICE guidelines and NSFs ensuring that nursing practice within the department develops accordingly.
  • To participate in the clinical governance agenda, initiating and lead audits of areas within the Accident & Emergency department and making recommendations as a result of audit to be presented to the department and then overseeing any changes as agreed.
  • To maintain clinical practice standards and knowledge, and act as a professional role model for all nursing staff.
  • Use own clinical judgement to initiate appropriate nursing interventions prior to medical input being available and advise Junior staff.
  • Maintain accurate, current and contemporaneous records and ensure that all records relating to patient care are clear, concise and legible in accordance with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.
  • Ensure adherence to the Trust Medicines Policy and the NMC Standards for the Administration of Medicines.
  • Lead specific areas of practice developments in accordance with local and national policies and strategies to improve patient care.
  • Actively assess and manage risk within the clinical area in accordance with Health and Safety legislation and risk management policy.

  • Promote clinical innovations and encourage evidence-based practices within the unit.
  • Be able to develop components for a teaching program for use within the unit.

ADMINISTRATIVE/MANAGERIAL:

  • Assist with duty rotas as required by the Senior Sisters/Charge Nurse.
  • Be responsible for the authorisation of timesheets/overtime as and when required
  • Work within clinical governance systems and ensure that care is delivered within an appropriate model within the Critical Care area.
  • Deputise for the Team Leader Nurse as required.
  • Implement and ensure adherence to all Trust policies.
  • Develop and implement protocols and or policies within own specialist area.
