Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Logistics Assistant with a number of positions available across locations within the Greater Manchester Area of the North West Ambulance Service.

The postholder will be responsible for providing logistics support in an operational sector of Greater Manchester, making sure that vehicles, equipment, and consumables are available for frontline staff. This role has been designed to assist and maintain the safe and effective deployment of ambulance resources by ensuring the operational environment is well-supported. The role is to work closely with operational managers, fleet department and clinical teams to maintain high standards of preparedness and support service resilience across their designated sector/area.

The role requires flexibility, attention to detail, and a commitment to high standards. The logistics assistant will be required to hold a full driving licence appropriate for driving an ambulance and may be required to work across a number of locations in the sector/area. This role involves physical work, coordination of tasks, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in a fast-paced, emergency healthcare environment.

The ability to communicate effectively with clinical and non-clinical staff and to work collaboratively with other logistic assistant postholders is important to support efficiency, enhance service delivery, operational effectiveness and foster a cohesive working environment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will report to the relevant Group Manager and work in close contact with the local leadership team. They will undertake a range of duties including routine vehicle readiness checks, ensuring vehicles are clean, fuelled, roadworthy and appropriately equipped.

Restocking of consumables, coordination of equipment servicing, and supporting the fleet team to coordinate vehicle movements for maintenance, deep cleaning, or other operational requirements. Coordination of vehicle movement will include driving ambulances and rapid response type vehicle of both the traditional type engine and electric type vehicles.

You will support the local operational team with the ordering of consumables and the unpacking of stores orders on arrival at stations and undertake inventory checks and support the resolution of any discrepancies.

Ensure all medical equipment is clean, functional, in-date and appropriately stored. Support the calibration, servicing, and repair of medical equipment by liaising with appropriate internal departments and external suppliers. Identify and remove faulty or expired equipment and ensure timely reporting and replacement.

Make sure the operational area is clean, safe, and organised, promoting a professional working environment for crews. This includes the service vehicle made available to the postholder, which will be used for transporting stock and equipment and at times staff to various locations across the Trust.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
