Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our integrated hand therapy service.

This post will be suitable for either an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist with experience in the management and treatment of Trauma and Orthopaedic hand conditions.

The post holder must have experience of splinting and a variety of treatment options for hand conditions. They must display excellent communications skills and be committed to CPD.

Ideally they should have completed the BAHT level 1 course or be open to working towards this with the support of the trust.

Supporting service development and implementing continual improvement is an essential part of this post. Active involvement in training and development is a key requirement in both meeting personal continuing professional development objectives and in providing expertise for delivery of staff training programmes within the Hand Therapy Department and the Trust.

As a Trust we provide integrated Orthopaedic Services to the population of Bolton and surrounding areas. The successful candidate will be integral to the continued delivery of a high quality, patient fused service.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as an autonomous practitioner within the MSK hand team being professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work
  • To manage a MSK hand caseload, using evidence based, client centred principles to provide specialised assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation and co-ordination of therapy intervention, for complex physical and psychological conditions in the most appropriate setting.
  • To initiate your own continued professional development through researching best practice, networking with colleagues and seeking training opportunities and support/clinical supervision sessions.
  • To be responsible for training, and supervision for all lower banded staff and students in specialist area.
  • To identify, initiate and implement service development.
  • To provide specialist knowledge, skills and advice to clients, and be a source of expertise for therapy staff, other members of the MDT and other agencies.
  • To work within a specialist area of clinical expertise and propose service changes which may impact on the wider MDT and ensure safe delivery of a quality service.
  • To support the Principle Service Lead, Team Leader and other Highly Specialist / Specialist Therapist as required.

Job responsibilities

To be professionally and legally accountable for own caseload. To organise, plan and evaluate interventions to meet clients and services priorities and to adjust these in line with available and changing resources.

To undertake specialist therapy assessments for clients within clinical area, including those with physical, sensory, psychological, perceptual and/or cognitive needs to identify areas of need. To use a variety of assessment methods both standardised and non-standardised, and clinical reasoning skills and knowledge for high quality clinical outcome.

To assess risks, make recommendations and document to ensure risks are reduced as far as possible within the clients daily activities and associated environments.

To work with clients and /or carers to identify client centred goals in order to formulate and deliver therapy whilst being sensitive to complex and distressing diagnosis/prognosis and the resulting impact this has on the individual.

To assess the patients understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack of capacity to consent to treatment.

To monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and when necessary modify to allow for changes due to disease progression and improvements with treatment. Use outcome measures where appropriate.

To provide specialist advice and training to clients and/or carers with complex needs to promote health and well being in terms of physical, psychosocial and/or functional skills. I.e. all treatment modalities applicable to that clinical area

To plan and organise a clients safe and timely discharge from the service in collaboration with the client, carer and multi-disciplinary team.

To provide specialist clinical knowledge for other therapists and the wider multi-disciplinary team when required to ensure they provide effective interventions.

To support the Principle Service Lead, Team Leaders, Highly Specialist and Specialist therapists as required.
