Job summary
A rare and exciting position has become available to replace a retiring knee surgeon in a friendly cohesive DGH. The successful applicant will join a department of 13 Orthopaedic surgeons. They will be expected to take on the work of the retiring surgeon, who specialises in complex knee elective and trauma work and to liaise with the highly experienced physiotherapy team that work closely with them. They will have the opportunity to do general lower limb elective and trauma if they wish.
They will be undertake a 1 in 8 weekday on call and a 1 in13 weekend on call on the general on call rota. The department is very proactive in regional registrar training and the post holder will be expected to participate in this.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the departmental programmes for education and training as well as the clinical governance process within the Department and the Trust.
Main duties of the job
To provide, along with consultant colleagues, a comprehensive Orthopaedic and trauma service for the patients of Bolton.
The appointee will share duties on the on-call rota on a 1 in 8 basis with the other consultants for the care of emergencies and in-patients. 1 in 13 weekends.
The job will entail regular ward rounds as well as active involvement in teaching junior staff. There will be a certain amount of administrative work and medical audit work. You will have your own designated medical secretary in the department.
About us
The Royal Bolton Hospital has been developed as the district general hospital for the area and serves a catchment population of 320,000 which includes the Bolton Metropolitan Borough as well as parts of Atherton, Leigh and Walkden. The hospital has all the specialties found in a large acute district general hospital, namely A&E, Acute and Elderly Medicine, surgery, Orthopaedics, pathology, radiology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Dermatology. There are three orthopaedic wards with a total of 75 beds.
The theatre complex has three dedicated orthopaedic theatres with laminar flow air systems.

Sub-specialist support from colleagues will be available for specialist fractures outside of your field (eg THR for #NOF).
The post holder will be expected to complement the knee orthopaedic services offered by the Trust and provide the highest quality care to the local population. This should include all aspects of elective knee surgery including the surgical management of complex knee fractures and revisions. Submission and scrutiny of the last 12 months' surgical logbook of prospective candidates would form an integral part of the shortlisting and interview process. The post holder will be supported by their own SAS/Reg grade doctor.
