Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust

Staff Nurse - Intestinal Failure Unit (Hope 8)

The closing date is 19 April 2026

Job summary

We're inviting registered nurses with proven post registration experience and a keen interest in nutrition and intestinal failure (IF) to join our specialist IF service at Salford Royal Hospital, part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust.

The Intestinal Failure Unit (IFU) is a nationally designated specialist service which receives complex surgical patients from all over the UK. Being one of two specialist units in the whole of the country, the IFU has developed a strong reputation for being an international centre of excellence for medical and surgical care.

Due to service expansion, we are seeking to appoint enthusiastic band 5 registered staff nurses into our team! The role would suit somebody with experience in caring for patients with gastrointestinal conditions and who understands the complex nature when managing patients with complex long-term conditions. Previous experience in gastroenterology is desirable.

Rotations with our surgical wards can be considered for applicants desiring a role with comprehensive exposure to the surgical specialty.

Main duties of the job

The IFU Registered Nurse will manage, assess, and deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with complex Intestinal Failure (IF). This role is central to supporting patients throughout their journey, including the transition from inpatient care to ongoing management in the community. The post holder will have direct involvement with inpatients, carers, and a wide range of healthcare professionals, ensuring coordinated and person-centred care.

As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the Nurse will demonstrate emotional resilience, excellent communication, and strong interpersonal skills. They will liaise closely with community partners to facilitate seamless clinical care delivery and will support colleagues by promoting effective learning and development in practice.

Full training will be provided in the management of central venous catheters and complex stoma care; however, experience in managing patients with IF, IV therapy, and complex stoma or wound care would be advantageous. The successful applicant must hold active NMC registration and be able to evidence continual professional development. You must also demonstrate flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to think quickly in dynamic clinical settings, and a proven ability to work effectively within a team.
