Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Senior Clinical Fellow in the Departments of Upper Gastrointestinal (Oesophagogastric) and Bariatric Surgery, at Salford Royal Hospital. This is a 12 month post which will provide an opportunity for the appointee to learn and develop subspecialty-level skill in the management of Oesophagogastric cancer, complex benign Upper GI Surgery and Bariatric Surgery.
This post would be suitable for a senior 'middle grade doctor' or for a StR (ST 7&8) who wish to take Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) or Out of Programme for Training (OOPT) with the required approval.
Salford Royal Hospital, part of the NCA, is the sole surgical centre for Oesophagogastric cancer surgery for the whole of Greater Manchester (population of 3.2 million). The department also provides bariatric surgery for the Greater Manchester. Since September 2018 the unit has undertaken all Oesophagogastric cancer resections and all complex benign upper GI operations for the patients of Greater Manchester. It is estimated that the unit performs approximately 160 Oesophagogastric cancer resections and well over 200 bariatric operations each year. The unit has special interest in minimally invasive Upper GI surgery and this post is designed to provide opportunity to develop advanced surgical skills in minimally invasive oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, bariatric and complex benign Upper GI surgery, as well as gaining confidence in undertaking open Upper GI cancer surgery.
Main duties of the job
To provide further training in Oesophagastric, Complex Benign Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery with emphasis improving competence for performing cancer resections, bariatric and complex benign Upper GI surgery.
Any specific need for research or training for the appointed candidate will be given consideration. The successful candidate will take part in the Emergency General Surgery oncall rota (currently 1 in 12). The successful candidate will also take part in the OG 'on-call' rota, which involves delivering care for all inpatients and acute referrals to the OG service. The unit has an active research programme. The appointee is expected to take part in research and academic work.
The appointee will be expected to participate fully in the provision of work within the UGI department. It is proposed that the appointee will provide 10 PA's per week (9 PA's DCC and 1 SPA) which will include outpatient clinics, operating theatre lists, endoscopy lists and administration. Attendance is required at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and participating in Audit. The post-holder will be expected to take a lead role in ensuring delivery of a quality service. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the clinical service
