Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust

IV Specialist Nurse

The closing date is 03 September 2025

Job summary

This secondment presents an exciting opportunity to join the NCA IV Access Specialist Nursing Team, based predominantly at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

We are looking for an experienced nurse who enjoys a challenge and is eager to be part of a dynamic, specialist team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing IV access referrals and for the insertion and ongoing care of medium to long-term intravenous devices such as Extended Dwell Cannulas (EDCs), Midlines, and Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs), using advanced techniques and specialist equipment, including ultrasound.

The role involves close collaboration with multi-professional teams across the wider Northern Care Alliance, offering expert clinical advice, supporting patient care planning, and guiding staff in all aspects of IV therapy. You will contribute to staff education and training programmes, participate in clinical audits and service development, and help maintain and review IV access policies and protocols.

The post holder will also support the team lead and support with coordinate of the IV Access Team when required.

Main duties of the job

The IV Access Specialist Nurse will be responsible for the placement and management of intravenous devices, including the use of highly specialist equipment such as ultrasound, and the interpretation of chest x-rays following PICC insertions.

A key part of the role includes the daily triage and management of IV access referrals, requiring the ability to prioritise patients effectively and manage time and workload independently in a fast-paced clinical environment.

The post holder will support the ongoing development and improvement of IV services across the Northern Care Alliance, with a focus on promoting patient safety, quality of care, and vessel health. They will assess and address complex health and wellbeing needs related to IV therapy, promote equality and diversity, and ensure the health, safety, and security of themselves and others is maintained.

The role also involves leading and supporting others in the development of clinical knowledge and practice, contributing to research and service development, and delivering education and training across professional groups.

Effective communication is essential, as the role requires engagement with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams on complex and potentially sensitive matters.
