Job summary
The role of the Epilepsy Nurse is multifaceted; however, the ultimate aim is to provide a high-quality, specialist service to babies, children, and young people with epilepsy within various community settings.
They will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care while managing a caseload. Acting as a link between primary and secondary care, the nurse will serve as a source of contact and advice for patients, carers, and other health professionals.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work both autonomously and as part of the wider epilepsy service within the children's community nursing team. They will be supported in making key decisions that directly and indirectly influence patient care. Flexibility and adaptability to the needs of the service are essential.
The candidate should have knowledge and understanding of both national and local guidance related to epilepsy. Post-registration experience at a Band 5 level is required; experience working with epilepsy or neurological conditions is an advantage. The desirable candidate will demonstrate, via CPD, a commitment to ongoing learning.

Main duties of the job
The Children's Epilepsy Nurse will support the children's community nursing service by providing specialist nursing skills, knowledge, and expertise in the care and management of babies, children, and young people with epilepsy.
The post holder will be part of a dedicated team that manages patients with a range of epilepsies.
Their role will involve clinical practice, working directly with children and young people with epilepsy, as well as their families and carers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing a caseload of identified babies, children, or young people within the epilepsy service
- Supporting special school nurses with identified patients
- Working across various settings, including offices, clinics, patients' homes, educational settings, and community environments
The post holder will strengthen clinical and professional leadership in epilepsy care, inspiring colleagues, enhancing standards, and developing professional practice.
They will provide clinical expertise to the team, acting as a role model in the delivery of patient care. Additionally, they will support the Team Manager in the effective management of the service. The post holder will also lead, support, supervise, and train staff, contributing to the ongoing development of the service.
