Job summary

The Bladder and Bowel Service (BABS) is available to the residents of Salford and those registered with a Salford GP. The role of the bladder and bowel nurse is to identify, diagnose and treat patients presenting with bladder and bowel dysfunction.

The service is a proactive, treatment focused team of specialist nurses who aim to promote continence through evidence-based clinical standards. When continence is unachievable, appropriate management strategies are developed and implemented to enhance patient care, ensure personal dignity and maintain the patient's quality of life, supporting the patient, families and their carers.

In addition, the clinical team provide a specialist professional advisory service to primary and secondary care professionals, social care agencies, voluntary and the private sector within the City of Salford.

Main duties of the job

Specific Aims of the Service:

  • To improve access to continence services that values best practice in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of urinary and bowel dysfunction.
  • To provide evidence based advice and support to those patients with bladder and or bowel dysfunction and their carers.
  • To provide a variety of bladder and bowel based training and education to community teams.
  • To prevent unnecessary GP appointments, A&E attendance and hospital admissions by providing timely and effective assessments and reviews.
  • To promote health within the wider community by working collaboratively with other agencies, both statutory and voluntary, in order to reduce health inequalities.
  • Offer patient centered assessments which will be undertaken either within a domiciliary environment, PCT clinic, GP surgery or one in which privacy, dignity and confidentiality are ensured.
  • To provide a specialist nurse-led telephone advisory service on a daily basis dedicated to offering evidence based clinical advice.
  • To play a role in the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
  • To treat every patient as an individual with respect and dignity, sensitive to their health, social and cultural needs.
  • To provide a high quality, patient-focused, cost effective home delivery service.
  • To constantly review and evaluate containment and other continence management products, taking the views of the service users into account
