Job summary

This interesting opportunity has arisen for an Ophthalmic Technician within the Eye Ward Rochdale Infirmary the role involves completing various diagnostic tests that will support diagnosis and treatment options for patients, running Lasers and Casualty clinics performing visual acuity, instilling eye drop medication and organising patient load .

We are an friendly, expanding multidisciplinary team, working in a busy surgical ophthalmic unit which has 2 adult lounges and 1 Paediatric lounge. We have an in house pre-assessment and also provide a very busy emergency eye casualty service.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure that all test results from IOL Master (Biometry measurement), ICare, autorefractor, Focimeter are uploaded to Openeyes for medical staff to examine.
  • Provide measurements and test results that provide the doctor with the information needed to arrive at a diagnosis and to prescribe treatment
  • Prepare and position patients for diagnostic procedures including transfer from trolley/Wheelchair.
  • Achieve patient's optimum mobility (assisting patients to walk to Pre-op Suite) and Physical comfort using all available equipment and manual handling techniques where appropriate
  • The ability to test the strength of patients glasses using automated focimetry
  • Maintain patient's privacy and dignity
  • Perform other duties as required
  • Ensure all medical equipment is clean, maintained and safely stored after use
  • Assist with general cleaning, tidiness and presentation of the department environment
  • Undertake clerical duties under the direction of the clinic manager or named deputy
  • Use appropriate communication skills in the presence of any aggressive or abusive behaviour.
  • Keep up-to-date with all internal communications (Trust, division, department, ward memos, emails, newsletters, team brief) and attend ward meetings
  • Carry out clinical duties in accordance with National, Trust and local standards and policies.

Qualifications

Essential

  • English and Maths As and Bs
  • Care Certificate / L2 Health related vocational qualification or commitment to work towards

Desirable

  • Have at least 2 years' experience working in a ward environment/technician role/ or as a computer technician
  • Ophthalmic NVQ level 3

Skills

Essential

  • Literacy: in order to read and understand written instructions and documents.
  • Be able to organise own workload
  • To be able to work unsupervised and use own initiative
  • Interpersonal: in order to communicate effectively with other staff, patients and relatives, both face to face and on the telephone.
  • I.T: excellent computer skills desirable e.g. Microsoft, e-mail etc.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the importance of team working and the ability of working within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Have sufficient manual dexterity to operate a keyboard and navigate a mouse

  • Venepuncture skills or willingness to learn
