Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology

Job summary

This is a laboratory based role in a busy cellular pathology department. The department processes a wide range of specimens and applications from individuals with experience of Mohs, Dermatopathology, Renal, Neuropathology, Immunocytochemistry, direct immunofluorescence or non gynae cytology are particularly welcome.

This is a Biomedical scientist role Band 5/6 depending on qualifications

We can offer a place in a large dynamic laboratory, that is the Greater Manchester centre for neuropathology, upper GI surgery, dermatology and renal medicine. We have histochemistry and immunofluorescence services.

The department is UKAS and HTA accredited. We handle over 40 000 histology and 2500 Diagnostic cytology specimens a year for our hospitals and GPs. The immunocytochemistry service is busy and uses Ventana Benchmark Ultra immunomachines.

Main duties of the job

  • A typical day involves processing and checking cell path preparations and tests.
  • Be involved with all aspects of the routine histology service, including handling renal biopsies, frozen sections, a broad range of immunocytochemical tests and special stains.
  • Be involved with essential quality checks of the slides being issued to the histopathology consultants.
  • Active participation in CPD and opportunities for further study are encouraged and where possible supported. The department is committed to developing its staff.

  • IBMS specialist portfolio in cellular pathology, or can demonstrate equivalent qualifications and/ or experienc
  • Professional certificate in training e.g. IBMS Certificate of Extended Practice in Training
  • Professional certificate in quality management e.g. IBMS Certificate of Extended Practice in Quality management

Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience
