Paediatric Epilepsy Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job summary

The candidate would work within the Pediatric Specialist Nursing Team to oversee care delivered to children under this specialist service. We are looking for someone with good previous experience in this specialty.The role will also include line management responsibilities. The successful candidate should be willing to complete additional leadership training to be able to have strong oversight of the service. The successful candidate will also be involved with service development, governance and quality.

The role includes working closely with our community provider to provide a cohesive and joined up service. We are looking for someone who is dedicated in providing high quality inpatient and outpatient care to the children and young people under our service.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical leadership and expertise in a speciality by providing information, support, advice and specialist knowledge to patients, their families and carers, and to act as a resource to the multi-professional team. To participate in the co-ordination of patient care to ensure continuity throughout the patient's care pathway. To be pivotal in review and development of the service, and to reflect the needs of the patient group.

To liaise closely with the health care teams of inpatient wards, outpatient department and primary care, including Consultant Physicians and GP's. To demonstrate wide and in-depth experience of all aspects of the speciality, exercising clinical leadership and effective education within their sphere of practice. To monitor and improve standards of care through clinical audit, leading the development of practice through research.

Job responsibilities

  • To operate autonomously at an advanced level of clinical practice providing research based expert care and advice to all colleagues and managing a caseload effectively, making the most of available time
  • To accept referrals from medical/nursing staff both within and external to the Trust, of newly diagnosed and existing patients
  • To periodically review caseload and to discharge patients appropriately within to divisional guidelines
  • To ensure that patients are seen within the recommended time scales and targets where these are in place
  • To utilise specialist, skills, underpinned by in depth theoretical knowledge, to facilitate the assessment, planning and implementation of individualised programmes of care for patients presenting with a specialist condition and to evaluate their programmes of care.
  • To undertake initial assessment of patients including:
    • physical examination
    • assessment/investigation of symptoms
    • evaluation of test results
    • recommendation of further diagnostic tests
  • To respond to telephone enquiries and assess patients via telephone communication to co-ordinate admission or changes in appointment dates as warranted by the patients clinical condition, including the operation of a telephone helpline for the relevant speciality if required
  • To obtain informed consent for specific procedures in line with relevant Trust policies and protocols ensuring full explanation is given.
  • To perform clinical interventions and diagnostic tests as the post requires once training has been given, following and applying correct Trust protocols to ensure safe practice within the sphere of the advanced nurse role.
  • To supply and/or administer medications according to Patient Group Directions or in accordance with the Trusts Prescribing Policy for registered nurse prescribers.
