The closing date is 03 November 2025

Job summary

Applications are invited for this exciting new Locum consultant appointment in Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). This post is offered initially for a fixed term period of 12 months, providing an excellent opportunity to join the department now, with a substantive appointment planned to be re-advertised at the conclusion of this appointment. The successful applicant will join a large and dynamic department of 15 consultants, covering the full breadth of ophthalmic subspecialties.

We are particularly seeking to strengthen our neuro-ophthalmology service, working closely with colleagues in neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology. At the same time, we are committed to tailoring the role to reflect the wider expertise and interests of the successful candidate. The job plan can be adapted to include other subspecialty areas such as cataract surgery, medical retina, uveitis, paediactrics, cornea, glaucoma, or oculoplastics, depending on the applicant's skills and aspirations.

This post offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of neuro-ophthalmology in a thriving teaching hospital, while also shaping the role around your professional interests. We are looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative consultant who is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to education, research, and service innovation.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to manage Neuro-Ophthalmic patients, clinics will be a mix of face-to-face and virtual reviews. NNUH is an acute trust and the appointee will also be involved in the management of acute presentations to their service. Responsibilities will also be undertaken in another area of interest. Our current clinic templates are based on new and follow up appointments. Typically, the appointee would be expected to see 4 new patients and 6 follow-up patients per face-to-face clinic in addition to supervising other doctors, optometrists and specialist nurses.

The Neuro-Ophthalmology service currently has capacity to see around 80 patients per month based on new and follow up attendances, we also run a virtual clinic with the requirement to hold a review clinic each week.

The theatre lists undertaken in ophthalmic theatres will be local anaesthetic cataract lists with the aim to see 8 or more patients per list, depending on complexity
