Job summary

Senior Clinical Fellow for Stroke Services

This is a full time one-year fixed term appointment to a Senior Clinical Fellow (STR3+ Equivalent) within the Stroke Service.

Stroke Medicine is a vibrant Specialty at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. There have been significant developments over the last few years. Patients are now admitted directly to the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (Heydon Ward). Urgent CT is available, and 24/7 thrombolysis is supported by a rota of Band 6 Nurses. Applicants with a variety of experience are welcome to apply. Examples may include:

  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • General (Internal) Medicine/Acute Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics

Main duties of the job

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.

All doctors, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust's Clinical Governance programmer. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management

Every encouragement will be given to the candidate to get through his/her exams and also expand his/her experience in all aspects of Stroke Medicine and General Medicine. Intensive training for the MRCP exams and PACES is available in the NNUHFT.

The post will be based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Norwich Community Hospital Trust. Features of the Stroke Service:

  • High volume service - upto 1200 strokes per year, 1000+ people assessed in the rapid access TIA Clinic
  • Active stroke thrombolysis service 24/7
  • TIA clinics providing same day service to most patients
  • Stroke Rehabilitation
  • Academic Department - Active participation in multi-centre + local studies. Excellent opportunity to become involved in research and clinical audits.
  • Members of Consultant Staff include Dr Nav Shinh (Clinical Lead), Dr Kneale Metcalf, Dr Chit Hmu, Dr Rajesh Rajakunjaram and Dr Paddy Sutton. The Neurology Consultants also jointly run the TIA clinic.
  • Active participation in the regional stroke teleconference held monthly

We provide a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services, day case operations and a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU). The trust is commemorating 150 years of a hospital in Cromer in 2017/18.
