Job summary

Older Peoples medicine (OPM) is a specialty that has evolved in recent years to meet the needs of the growing population of people over the age of 80 years old.

We are the largest directorate within the trust. Patients are cared for within 5 inpatient wards, and our outpatient services. Each ward will have a unique specialist focus within the specialism. Brundall, Dunston, Earsham, Loddon and Elsing Ward.

Dunston Ward and Brundall are acute OPM wards, caring for patients with complex cognitive impairment/delirium and or with complex care needs. Earsham is an ortho/medical ward caring for patient requiring surgery for fracture Neck of Femurs.

The wards have 37/8 beds, they are spilt into teams to care for the patients. Each team will consist of registered and unregistered members of staff. The wards provide high standards of care/ support to patients and their families approaching at the end of their lives. This care is supported by our dementia palliative care specialist nurse.

As wards we try to reduce patient's deconditioning in hospital which is supported by trained exercise professionals. In OPM we like to focus on celebrating occasions within the ward environments and we like to involve relatives and patients where possible. We are currently have a specialist Dementia Garden going through the planning stage which will provide a safe outside interactive space for the benefit of our patients, their families and staff.

Main duties of the job

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, work with all members of the multidisciplinary team, to contribute to the provision of the highest standards of patient care.

To carry out duties as specified in within the Trust's Approved Core Task List for Health Care Assistants.

To supervise and support new, unregistered staff.

Communicate effectively within the nursing team, multi-disciplinary team and other departments to ensure that patient care is well planned and coordinated.

To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service,all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH's 'PRIDE' values of People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence and demonstrate behaviours that support and encourage an inclusive culture

This is a two-year course, resulting in Nursing Associate registration and making you eligible to train as a Registered Nurse via a shortened nursing degree or Registered Nurse degree apprenticeship (RNDA).

The TNA course acts as a stepping stone to becoming a Nurse, as a teaching hospital we are proud to able offer this opportunity to our Health Care Assistants.

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will be supported through your Care Certificate Programme, requiring completion of set standards, with help from our dedicated Medical Clinical Educator and Practice Development teams.

Upon completion of the certificate, you will also have the opportunity to work additional bank shifts in alternative areas of interest. This will enable you to gain further experience across specialties.
