Job summary

The Pharmacy Department undertakes the ordering, receipt and supply of medicines to all wards and departments throughout the Trust and also to many external customers. This includes dispensing for inpatients, outpatients and discharge medication and also ward stocks averaging around 2,500 items a day. There is also a large Aseptic Services Unit manufacturing and/or supplying chemotherapy and radiopharmaceuticals and associated Quality Assurance laboratories.

The Pharmacy Department is split into five main areas - Pharmacy Stores, Dispensary, Aseptic Services, Quality Assurance and Clinical, which includes specialisms such as Medicines Information, Clinical Trials and other Highly Specialist Pharmacists/Technicians.

Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Department are looking for an experienced Pharmacy Technician to oversee the procurement and distribution of Pharmacy Stores.

The successful candidate will be required to directly line manage a team to ensure the purchasing, invoicing and distribution of medicines is done efficiently and effectively.

The post holder will need to be experienced in working as a Pharmacy Technician in a hospital pharmacy environment and will have experience or knowledge of working to MHRA guidelines, pharmacy procurement and cost saving initiatives. Experience or knowledge of current procurement practices, stakeholder engagement and working with different procurement teams, such as the East of England Collaborative Procurement Hub, is desirable.

This is a busy and exciting post and the post holder will need to have excellent communication and organisational skills. Previous managerial experience is essential, and ideally the applicant would have completed or be working towards a formal procurement diploma. Hours will be worked Monday to Friday with a requirement to work 1 in 10 weekends with corresponding time off during the week. There is also a requirement to work at least one bank holiday each year.

  • To ensure that appropriate records and procedures are maintained and/or developed
  • To devise and maintain a Quality Management System
  • To support the containment of expenditure within Pharmacy Services budgets in accordance with Trust and local policies to include cost efficiency initiatives, income generation and cost improvement plans, particularly in relation to drugs use and expenditure.
  • In liaison with the Operations Manager, Support Services, to manage and keep secure the drug stocks within the Pharmacy Department including bulk stores, and controlled drugs, and maintain conditions appropriate for the dispensing and distribution of medicines in accordance with the Royal Pharmaceutical Societys Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines.
  • To manage the approved stock control and accounting system including stock rotation and stock reconciliation across Dispensary and Stores.
  • To line manage staff within relevant section ensuring sufficient resource is available for the tasks required. This will include appraisal, probation reviews, absence management, recruitment etc.
  • To dispense prescriptions, calculate doses and quantities for supply and provide advice to other staff and patients.
  • To participate as an accredited checker in dispensary when required. A minimum of 8 hours a month should be spent on this activity to maintain competence.
  • Co-ordinate the procurement of pharmaceuticals, raw materials and sundries on a Trust wide basis in accordance with the Trusts standing financial instructions and audit reports using the computerised ordering system.
  • To represent the Trust on the Regional Purchasing Consortium in the absence of the Operations Manager, Support Services.
  • To contribute to the preparation of regional contracts and buying agreements.
  • Support the development of annual business planning and workforce plans in operational area with the Operations Manager, Support Services, Principal Pharmacist, Support Services and Service Operations Manager, Pharmacy.
  • To manage the stock return system in support services in liaison with the Operational Manager, Support Services.
