Job summary
The Renal Counsellor role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced counsellor with an interest in providing holistic care and support working alongside a team of specialist renal nurses, and specialist social worker, for the diverse patient group within our specialty. This patient group consists of those at all different stages of their disease process, and all requiring an individualized approach to their care and support needs.
The Nephrology department consists of an inpatient ward at NNUH, an off-site dialysis unit in Norwich, a satellite unit in Cromer, and the Home Therapies Department. The successful applicant must be prepared to counsel patients across these settings, either face to face, via Microsoft Teams, by telephone, and in patients own homes, where appropriate.

Main duties of the job
Planning, implementing and developing programmes of psychological care including teaching of nursing staff
Monitoring and evaluating such programmes to ensure maintenance of standards of psychological care
Providing guidance, advice, support and monitoring of training to all staff involved in patient care to ensure the psychological needs of patients and their families are recognised, acknowledged and met.
Maintaining accurate records having due regard to confidentiality and legal aspects
Availability to nursing staff and in service training for the instruction of learners and trained staff in the psychological care of patients and their families
Achieving integration as a team member in the overall care of renal patients.

- Patients in the early stages of their diagnosis of renal failure
- Patients with chronic renal failure necessitating dialysis in the (near) future
- Patients already on haemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
- Renal transplant patients
- Patients with acute renal failure
- Patients will be referred either by nursing or medical staff.
- Further roles of the renal counsellor will include:
