Job summary

Radiotherapy is the use of radiation to damage and kill diseased cells. Its main use is found in cancer treatment, where it can be used on its own, or as part of a wider treatment, which may also involve surgery or chemotherapy. Therapeutic Radiographers work in the radiotherapy department to plan and deliver radiotherapy.

The radiotherapy department at NNUH is a networked, paperless department. We have a managed service contract which allows us to purchase and maintain state of the art radiotherapy equipment, including a fleet of five Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators, two CT simulators, a Varian Bravos brachytherapy unit and an Xstrahl 150 superficial unit. Our dosimetry planning is radiographer-led, predominately using VMAT and IMRT. We also have radiographer-led on-treatment review and radiotherapy late effects services

We are a clinical placement site for student radiographers from University of Suffolk, giving you the opportunity to help us shape the next generation of therapeutic radiographers. We are also the host provider for the East of England Operational Delivery Network putting us at the forefront of service design in the region.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for forward thinking, team players, who want to take up this exciting degree apprenticeship opportunity. The successful candidates will study to gain a BSc (Hons) Degree in Therapeutic Radiography whilst working in the radiotherapy department.

The degree apprenticeship will be delivered as a 3-year programme in Therapeutic Radiography with on-the-job training and specific academic support from Sheffield Hallam University (20% protected time). Most of the taught element of your degree apprenticeship will be undertaken remotely, although there will be a short placement at the university base each year. On completion of the training period, the employee will be expected to qualify as a Therapeutic Radiographer and gain HCPC registration in order to practice.

The Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer is part of a team who is responsible for planning and delivering high quality treatment to cancer patients. The radiotherapy department is open weekdays between 7.00 and 20:00 and your shifts will be allotted between these hours.
