Job summary

The Emergency Department at NNUH is seeking to recruit highly motivated and passionate individuals to join our team as a Sister / Charge Nurse. The NNUH hosts the busiest Emergency Department in the East of England seeing over 120,000 patients every year.

This role is key in continuing our #JourneytoOutstanding and ensuring that patients are at the heart of everything we do. We're looking for an individual with excellent communication skills who is capable of providing the highest possible standard of patient care.

You'll work within a varied Multi-disciplinary Team, playing a vital part in ensuring a safe, timely and effective patient experience.

Main duties of the job

You will be providing overall nursing leadership and management of the ED department having responsibility for the period of duty. Ensure a high standard of research based nursing practice delivering patient care. You will act as a clinical specialist giving advice to other ward areas and outside agencies as required. You will be responsible for the promotion and implementation of ED competencies and standards set by the nursing and midwifery professional bodies and trust nursing policies and guidelines. You will also participate in the teaching programme of the department.

Job responsibilities

  • Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC Code , or HCPC code and work within limits of competence
  • Maintain a high standard of nursing care by acting as a professional Role Model to others adopting the ED Philosophy of nursing in his/her clinical practice.
  • To work effectively in all Nursing roles across the department including Shift Lead, and Area Leads as required.
  • Ensure daily compliance with Perfect Ward for area of allocation/department.
  • Implement effective assessment and delegation of workload to more junior members of staff ensuring that their duties are carried out efficiently and competently.
  • To be responsible for and supervise the assessment planning and implementation of individual care needs of the patient and evaluate programmes of care.
  • Responsible for the continuity of care between shifts by efficient planning of duty rota and ensuring adequate reporting arrangements on a day to day basis.
  • To support bereaved relatives in the department and junior staff whilst they are undertaking this role.
  • Ensure that accurate records of all care given and observations are maintained. Ensure that the IT system is updated, collecting appropriate Data as requested by the trust and DOH.
  • To organise/supervise admission, discharge and transfer of patients
  • In the absence of the ED Matron, take responsibility for the day to day operational management of the department in order to meet the patients needs and those of the organisation, implementing appropriate action at times of staff shortage.
  • Act up to provide cover in the absence of the ED Matron.
  • To assist ED Matron in creating an environment which will facilitate a regular exchange of ideas in order to assist change.
  • Within the aims and requirements of the ED department, organise and facilitate Professional Development within mentor group.
  • Participate and supervise the appraisal process within mentor group ensuring team compliance with mandatory training
