Job summary
The EPA Blood Sciences laboratory provide a multidisciplinary 24/7 service to the James Paget University NHS Foundation Trust. The laboratory occupies an open plan area, operating Abbott Alinity analysers in Haematology and Chemistry, together with ACLTOPS in coagulation and staffed by a multidisciplinary team of MLA, AP and BMS.
The JPUH spoke laboratory is a part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance providing a Pathology service to Norfolk and North Suffolk that also includes the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Hub Laboratory and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital spoke laboratory at Kings Lynn.
The Blood Science IT systems that the successful candidate will have a good working knowledge of are:
- Dedalus APEX LIMS
- Clinisys ICE requesting
- Abbott AMS and Werfen Modulab middleware
- Qpulse Quality Management system
Main duties of the job
The post holder will ideally be an experienced BMS and advocate of multidisciplinary blood science working with a passion for quality management, overseeing the day-to-day operational service of the laboratory and all its staff.
Reporting and accountable to the CBMS, the essential responsibilities are covered in the Job description, including working alongside the Transfusion Lead BMS in deputising for the CBMS by taking on additional responsibilities for conducting return to work interviews, staff appraisals, organizing roster cover etc.
With a passion for Quality Management, the post holder will lead the drive to improve training and competency completion in all Blood Science areas and be actively involved in error logging, audit and review of key performance areas of the laboratory in our focus to achieve and maintain accreditation to ISO 15189 standards. You will take a technical lead on change processes in the lab, including assay verification and validation, oversight of blood science document control, process validation, interval reviews (CAPA monitoring) and ensuring bench SOP's are relevant and up to date.

- Communicates complex clinical scientific service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
- Answers complex telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information that is highly complex about methodologies and service requirements.
- Explains complex results and reassures the users that the information is correct when results do not agree with the clinical presentation and investigate.
- Manage and maintain specialised databases in laboratory computer systems and patient storage databases.
- Responsible for inputting and amending advanced specialist patient data and results, which includes other colleagues work.
- Responsible for use, retrieval and storage of patient information on several patient database systems for access by external and internal users.
- Regularly use research & development protocols to provide statistical presentations of internal quality control to assess equipment performance in line with Westgard rules to check the quality of the analyses.

- Investigate abnormal and unusual results by recognised research & development protocols to explain and correct the anomalies and to produce a report on corrective action taken.
