Job summary

12 Month Fixed term contract/ secondment opportunity

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital diagnoses upwards of 6,000 patients with cancer each year and is the 4th largest cancer center in England. The urology department saw 3476 suspected urology cancer referrals of which 694 patients were diagnosed with a urology cancer and converting into 409 (11.8%) prostate cancer diagnosis for 2022/23.

We are delighted to being supported by the East of England Cancer Alliance to pilot the role of Prostate Biopsy Consultant Practitioner to support our 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard. A significant amount of time has been spent on capacity and demand modelling, quality improvement events and service redesign to support the introduction of the role. This is a new role as a Consultant Practitioner and will focus on new suspected prostate cancer referrals through to diagnosis, including performing prostate biopsies (LATP). There is an example job plan available on request.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to hold a patient caseload from urgent referral through to diagnosis, or exclusion of a cancer diagnosis. The post holder must be an established Leader and able to demonstrate innovative thinking, up to date knowledge and research, service redesign and quality improvements, and autonomous clinical experience at a senior level. Key aspects of the role include:

  • Patient case load of new urgent suspected prostate cancer
  • Undertaking Local Anesthetic Template Prostate Biopsies
  • Participate in MDT discussions and presentation.
  • Lead on Service Improvements and pathway redesign.

Line management of Prostate Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists.

You will join other Consultant Practitioners within NNUH to grow our Consultant Practitioner contingent.

There is an option for this post to be a developmental role if a suitable candidate does not meet the person specification for the Consultant Practitioner post but demonstrates skills for an Advanced Clinical Practitioner at band 8a and a job description is available on request. The funding is committed for one year through the Cancer Alliance with a view to continue the post substantively if the pilot is successful.
