Job summary
We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner wishing to progress, to join our existing senior team in the role of a Vascular Access Practitioner. The team performs bedside insertion of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC) and Midlines. They utilise the BD Sherlock 3CG system to perform bedside insertions across the whole Trust. Full training and competency sign off will be part of your competency program run by BD, with peer support from the existing team.
The Vascular Access Team currently also support our Practice Development and Education team Trust wide, with education in the safe care of PICCs and Midlines.
Full support and opportunities will be given to develop your Leadership skills, utilising our existing competency framework and trust leadership courses.

Joining the team as a Vascular Access Practitioner you will take an active lead in the effective management of the workload within the clinical area, by providing leadership and supervision to the wider team. Job responsibilities
- To work unsupervised and to manage own caseload of patients.
- To become an expert practitioner in the placement of central venous access devices using ultrasound. This will initially be peripherally inserted central catheters using Patient Group Directives/Drug Protocols within this specialty.
- Vet requests for vascular access taking the responsibility for ensuring the most appropriate venous access is utilised.
- Discuss with the patient their medical history, and ensure that the most appropriate venous access is utilised.
- Perform clinical examination and assessment on acutely ill patients.
- Provide psychological, social and practical support relevant to the diverse needs of patients requiring intravenous access (IV), and their families, communicating complex and sensitive information, taking account of barriers to understanding and providing reassurance.
- Obtain written consent from patients after explaining to them the risk and benefits of the procedure as per Trust and national protocols. Deal with any communication issues that arise, making sure that the consent obtained is made with capacity, informed and voluntary, To act as the patients advocate at all times.
- To provide patients with written information regarding their PICC line and how to care for their line. Record information of the procedure and equipment used in patients records, ensuring records are legible, accurate and detailed.
- To be competent to Intermediate Life Support level.
- To interpret chest x-ray to determine line position post insertion of a PICC.
- To convey any complications to the medical consultant responsible for the patient. To maintain audit relating to line placement.
- Implement and audit standards related to this client group.
- Contribute, review and assist in developing written policies, procedures and protocols for the management of all patients requiring PICC access in conjunction with other members of the multi-disciplinary team across the Trust.
- Lead on the continuing development, implementation and evaluation of effective patient information related to this client group.
- Continue to update and develop own clinical and theoretical knowledge on IV access.
- To ensure the economic use of supplies and equipment and maintain stock levels sufficient to run the service.
- Report faulty equipment in a timely way.
- To show commitment to achieve the highest quality of service delivery, which will include shift work, extended day working, out of hours work and Bank Holidays.
