Job summary

An opportunity has arisen in the Radiology Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) for a night shift, Band 2 Radiology Department Assistant.

The Radiology department sits within the Diagnostic and Clinical Support Services division and provides diagnostic imaging and therapeutic treatments across a range of specialties across the Trust.

This role is primarily based in our ED X-Ray department coordinating with the emergency department to schedule patients for an x-ray. You will also be on hand to support the Radiography team as needed. Please be aware that this is predominantly a night shift role.

Additionally, you will be trained to support other modalities such as Ultrasound, CT and MRI to assist with all aspects of Imaging, for example preparing patients for examinations, helping to position patients for examinations and assisting with interventional procedures.

Main duties of the job

The role is patient focused so good communication is essential to assist patients and to demonstrate care and empathy to those who are unwell or distressed, helping them through the Imaging process.

The post holder will contribute to the provision of a high standard of care for patients and carry out some duties unaided, in accordance with Trust/Directorate policy, at the discretion of qualified staff.

Working pattern:

This role has a 4-week rolling working pattern (inclusive of bank holidays) with an average of 26.25hrs per week. The current pattern is:

Week 1: Thursday 1 x 7.5hrs day shift, Friday, Saturday & Sunday 3 x10hrs night shift;6 x days off

Week 2/3: Sunday, Monday & Tuesday - 3 x 10hrs night shift;5 x days off

Week 4: Monday 1 x 7.5hrs day shift, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 3 x 10hrs night shift;6 x days off

The night shift is from 8.45pm to 7.15am. The 7.5hr shift is a 12pm to 8pm shift (although this is flexible).

Job responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of Radiographers assist with all aspects of imaging, including changing patients in preparation for examination. Administering oral contrast to patients having CT and MRI and to act as a second checker for Radiology Contrast media in CT and MRI, and Buscopan in MRI and CT Colonoscopies, according to Trust protocol.
  • Assist Radiographers in the positioning of patients for examinations.
  • Prepare and maintain trolleys for biopsies and to assist with biopsies, drainages etc, as and when the need arises.
  • Understand and demonstrate the fundamentals of Radiation Protection.
  • Demonstrate an established knowledge base of basic anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Prepare all imaging rooms to receive patients.
  • To help with all patients including distressed and unwell patients, explain procedures to them, and take care of them, reassuring them as required; reporting any problems or observed changes to the person undertaking the examination or the relevant trained staff, ie; Radiologists, Radiographers and Nursing staff.
  • Have an awareness of the patients condition, noting any observed changes and report to relevant trained staff i.e. Consultant Radiologists, Radiographers and Nursing staff.
  • Liaise with Radiologists, Ultra Sonographers and other Directorate Team members in the management of Ultrasound lists.
