Job summary

On Hethel ward, we care for over 36 acutely ill respiratory patients, providing various treatments such as non-invasive ventilation, chest drains, pleural procedures, and oxygen therapy among others.

We are a dedicated team lead by 4 deputies, a clinical educator and ward manager. We encourage you to be involved in raising and maintaining standards to improve the patient experience.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of our inspiring respiratory team. We care for a range of respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis, MND, lung cancer and respiratory failure. We deliver high quality care for these patients and facilitate and oversee their procedures and treatments. We rotate staff to our sister ward and give the opportunity to gain skills working in specialist fields within the department. We have a wealth of experience within our specialist nursing teams who hold yearly study days and monthly training sessions for all staff. We want you to be involved in change management and various hospital improvement projects. If you are looking for a great opportunity you will no doubt find that in our department.

  • Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work within limits of competence.
  • Assist the Ward/Department manager in maintaining standards of nursing practice.
  • Carry out and advise/supervise junior staff in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluating of nursing care.
  • Carry out the daily personal care of patients.
  • To take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Ward/Department Sister/ Charge Nurse.
  • To ensure the patient administration systems e.g. PAS are up-dated to ensure real time data collection and confidentiality.
  • To ensure the effective use of information technology for the benefit of patient care in accordance with the Trusts Cyber Code of Conduct.
  • To ensure the confidentiality of information (written, verbal, electronic) is maintained, whilst being aware of the Freedom for Information Act.
  • To co-ordinate and monitor the progress of patients within their plan of care and to promptly and effectively communicate relevant changes in patient status to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Effectively communicate complex, sensitive or contentious information to the multi-disciplinary team gaining their co-operation.
