Job summary
We are looking for passionate, professional, and ambitious Registered Nurse to join our Upper Gastrointestinal (HPB) Cancer Nurse Specialist Team for a fixed term contract/secondment, maternity leave cover.
An exciting opportunity has become available for a registered nurse to join our existing Upper GI Cancer Nurse Specialist within the Gastroenterology team for a fixed term contract, or secondment to cover for a period of maternity leave. Our Upper GI Cancer Nurse Specialists care for Service Users who have been diagnosed with Gastric, Oesophageal and HepatoPancreaticoBiliary Cancers. Service Users are supported from the point of diagnosis or referral through to treatment.
The following skills and experience will be required and are essential for the successful candidates:
- Have the ability to draw upon sound clinical experience, knowledge and skills to benefit and improve service user care.
- Knowledge of cancer pathways
- Excellent communication skills
- A willingness to learn and develop
This is a really exciting post and an excellent opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our established Upper GI cancer Nurse Specialist team; to work together and provide support and care for Service Users who are being treated by us and have presented with an Upper GI Cancer.
Main duties of the job
Your primary role as part of our team will be to support the HepatoPancreaticoBiliary however there will be an expectation of cross covering as required by the service. Service Users on this pathway are often referred to our team via the 2WeekWait pathway following a referral from their GP. This is the point where Service Users are introduced to our team as their 'Key Worker'. As 'Key workers' Service Users have open access to our team via the telephone. We have numerous calls during the day often for symptom advice or psychological support.
The majority of Service Users progress through the pathway whilst remaining at home. Our team is responsible for ensuring Service Users are supported through this journey and seen at key points e.g.at diagnosis, results giving and treatment planning. Some Service Users are diagnosed with their cancer whilst an inpatient. Part of our role is to support Service Users and their loved ones during their stay and ensure they are clear on next steps once discharged.
Service Users who have an HPB cancer will usually be referred to our local oncology team. In addition, some Service Users will be seen by the surgical team at Addenbrookes to discuss the role of surgery. This post holder will work closely with the surgical teams ensuring Service Users are supported through their pathway.
